The Turn of the Century
Rewritten versions of contributions to an international conference held at the University of Antwerp in May 1992. Starting point for the conference was the vagueness of the very terms 'modernism' and 'modernity'. In the first section a group of comparatists address the theoretical and terminological problems of modernism. Practical readings of modernist writers; discussions of different modernist movements; and, the work of critics who have contributed to debates about modernism make up the second section. The third section looks at the problem of modernism from an interartistic and interdisciplinary perspective.
Cannibalizing the Canon
This rich, in-depth exploration of Dada’s roots in East-Central Europe is a vital addition to existing research on Dada and the avant-garde. Through deeply researched case studies and employing novel theoretical approaches, the volume rewrites the history of Dada as a story of cultural and political hybridity, border-crossings, transitions, and transgressions, across political, class and gender lines. Dismantling prevailing notions of Dada as a “Western” movement, the contributors to this volume present East-Central Europe as the locus of Dada activity and techniques. The articles explore how artists from the region pre-figured Dada as well as actively “cannibalized”, that is, reabsorbed and further hybridized, a range of avant-garde techniques, thus challenging “Western” cultural hegemony.
The Lives of Texts
The Lives of Texts: Exploring the Metaphor examines various instances of “textual subsistence” implied by the title. Drawing on the parallel between a text and a living organism, the contributors analyze various literary texts ranging from the Middle Ages to postmodernity, as well as film adaptations and the graphic novel. Apart from the works of canonical writers, attention is also drawn to some long-forgotten authors, along with the most recent instances of popular literature and culture. The exploration of the title metaphor allows the contributors to trace life-like phenomena (e.g. textual birth, maturation, dissemination, death and resurrection) in the texts of writers so remote from each other as Layamon, Thomas More, Mary Shelley, Charles Williams, Ursula Le Guin, A. S. Byatt, Peter Ackroyd, Iain Banks, J. K. Rowling, or Neil Gaiman.
The European Avant-Garde
The European Avant-Garde: Text and Image is an interdisciplinary collection of thirteen essays relating to the study of European Avant-Garde movements between 1900 and 1940. The essays cover both literary and artistic subjects, across geographical, linguistic and disciplinary boundaries. Various aspects of the English, Irish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Polish avant-gardes are explored, examining both diverse literary genres such as prose, poetry and drama, and specific avant-garde movements such as Futurism and Surrealism. The volume includes a lengthy introductory essay by Prof. John J. White, Emeritus Professor of German and Comparative Literature at King’s College London. Avant-garde studies can be enhanced and developed through dialogue with other disciplines, such as translation, gender, exile and comparative studies. Thus, the volume is divided into four sections: Representations of the Body; Translating the Avant-Garde, Identity and Exile; and Comparative Perspectives and the Legacy of the Avant-Garde.

Exploring Space
Exploring space: Spatial notions in cultural, literary and language studies falls into two volumes and is the result of the 18th PASE (Polish Association for the Study of English) Conference organized by the English Department of Opole University and held at Kamień Śląski in April 2009. The first volume embraces cultural and literary studies and offers papers on narrative fiction, poetry, theatre and drama, and post-colonial studies. The texts and contexts explored are either British, American or Commonwealth. The second volume refers to English language studies and covers papers on lexicography, general linguistics and rhetoric, discourse studies and translation, second language acquisition/foreign language learning, and the methodology of foreign language teaching. Sozialistischer Realismus
Der vorliegende Sammelband ist der zweite Band innerhalb der Reihe „Lyrik des 20. Jahrhunderts in Ost-Mittel-Europa“. Er widmet sich vor allem lyrischen Texten, die unter sozialistischen Rahmenbedingungen entstanden sind. In den Beiträgen ergeben sich aus der konkreten Lektüre entscheidende Impulse für die Modellierung der kulturhistorischen Situation in Ost-Mittel-Europa. Das Ziel des Bandes besteht in einer vergleichenden typologischen Erfassung der Lyrik jener Zeit in ihrer inneren Differenzierung und in ihrer Relation zu weltliterarischen Prozessen. Hierbei wird auf unterschiedliche theoretische Ansätze zurückgegriffen. Die Fragen der AutorInnen beziehen sich auf die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen moderner Lyrik im Rahmen eines restriktiven Kultursystems, wie es der Sozialistische Realismus repräsentierte.
