Very light, very strong. extremely reliable -aircraft and aerospace engineers are. and have to be. very demanding partners in the materials community. The results of their research and development work is not only crucial for one special area of applications. but can also lead the way to new solutions in many other areas of advanced technology. Springer-Verlag and the undersigned editor are pleased to present in this volume. an overview of the many facets of materials science and technology which have been the objective of intensive and systematic research work during past decades in the laboratories of the German Aerospace Research Establishment. Its contents shows clearly the interrelation...
M. GIBBS and E. LATZKO In the preface to his Experiments upon Vegetables, INGEN-Housz wrote in 1779: "The discovery of Dr. PRIESTLEY that plants have a power of correcting bad air . . . shows . . . that the air, spoiled and rendered noxious to animals by their breath ing in it, serves to plants as a kind of nourishment. " INGEN-Housz then described his own experiments in which he established that plants absorb this "nourishment" more actively in brighter sunlight. By the turn of the eighteenth century, the "nourishment" was recognized to be CO . Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation, the 2 major subject of this encyclopedia volume, had been discovered. How plants assimilate the CO was a question s...
Addressed to both students as a learning text and scientists/engineers as a reference, this book discusses the physics and applications of quantum-well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs). It is assumed that the reader has a basic background in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, and semiconductor devices. To make this book as widely accessible as possible, the treatment and presentation of the materials is simple and straightforward. The topics for the book were chosen by the following criteria: they must be well-established and understood; and they should have been, or potentially will be, used in practical applications. The monograph discusses most aspects relevant for the field but omits, at the same time, detailed discussions of specialized topics such as the valence-band quantum wells.
Includes section, "Recent book acquisitions" (varies: Recent United States publications) formerly published separately by the U.S. Army Medical Library.
The second edition of this handbook concentrates on the analysis of steroids in biological fluids. It offers analysis of low levels of steroid analytes in biological fluids. This new edition also provides an extra chapter on pharmaceutical aspects of steroid analysis. Coverage details spectroscopic and other methods, including UV and IR absorption spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, chromatography and immunoassay of steroids.
