Multicultural Britain

Between the end of the Second World War and the early twenty-first century, Britain became multicultural. This vivid book tells that remarkable story. Kieran Connell, an historian of Irish and German heritage who grew up in Balsall Heath, inner-city Bir-mingham, takes readers into multicultural communities across Britain at key moments in their development. Journeying far beyond London, Multicultural Britain ex-plores the messy contradictions of the country's transition into today's diverse society. It reveals the ordinary people who have forged Britain's multiculturalism; skewers public leaders, from Enoch Powell to Harold Wilson to Margaret Thatcher, who have too often weaponized race for their own political ends; and shines a light on the shifting nature of British racism, revealing its enduring day-to-day impact on ethnic-minority groups. Between postcolonial reckonings and immigration anxieties, how people live together in Brexit Britain remains an urgent question for our time. Connell's fresh, thought-provoking book unveils British multiculturalism not as a problematic idea, but as a rich and complex lived reality.

The Vatican and the Americanist Crisis

The Americanist crisis grew out of a series of issues which occupied the attention of American and Roman prelates in the last decade of the nineteenth century and which divided the American hierarchy into two camps: on the one hand, the liberals, led by John Ireland, Archbishop of St. Paul, and Cardinal James Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore, and aided by Denis J, O'Connell, rector of the American College in Rome and agent for the American hierarchy; and on the other hand, the conservatives, led by Michael Corrigan, and the german-speaking bishops. The liberals or Americanists took a progressive stance toward American culture and sought to explain to Rome why America was different from Europe and why in America the separation of church and state was beneficial to the church. Throughout its history Roman Catholicism in America has faced the dual problematic of explaining itself to Rome and to the American cultural majority.

Disorders|Differences of Sex Development

The new, fully updated edition of this successful book, brings together the combined experience of a leading dedicated unit over 25 years in delivering expert medical and surgical care to children with DSD (Disorders|Differences of Sex Development) in a holistic environment. It documents the most recent advances in the molecular biology and embryology of sex development, and describes each variation in detail. The main focus of the book is on patients with variations with their anatomy and hormone function. New chapters describe the developments in the field in terms of definitions and incidence, the mental health of DSD patients and discuss the perspectives of patients families and support groups. The clinical presentation and approach to diagnosis are described both for babies and for children presenting later in childhood or at adolescence. The chapters on management highlight all the latest knowledge and include the shared wisdom of the authors on current controversies, such as the timing of surgical treatment. Finally, the authors describe their short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes, which demonstrate the strengths of holistic team management.
