This Special Issue explores underrepresented aspects of the political dimensions of global warming. It includes post- and decolonial perspectives on climate-related migration and conflict, intersectional approaches, and climate change politics as a new tool of governance. Its aim is to shed light on the social phenomena associated with anthropogenic climate change, as well as its multidimensional and far-reaching political effects, including climate-induced migration movements and climate-related conflicts in different parts of the world. In doing so, it critically engages with securitizing discourses and the resulting anti-migration arguments and policies in the Global North in order to identify and give a voice to alternative and hitherto underrepresented research and policy perspectives. In this way, it aims to contribute to a fact-based, critical, and holistic approach to human mobility and conflict in the context of political and environmental crisis.

What global shifts in markets and power mean for the politics and governance of sustainability. In recent years, major shifts in global markets from North to South have created a new geography of trade and consumption, particularly in the agricultural sector. How this shift affects the governance of sustainability, and thus the future of the planet, is the pressing topic Philip Schleifer takes up in this book. The processes of twenty-first-century globalization are fundamentally changing the politics and governance of commodity production, Schleifer argues, with profound implications for the environment in the food-producing countries of the Global South. At the center of Schleifer's study a...

Stranger from Abroad: Hannah Arendt, Martin Heidegger, Friendship and Forgiveness

Two titans of twentieth-century thought: their lives, loves, ideas, and politics. Shaking up the content and method by which generations of students had studied Western philosophy, Martin Heidegger sought to ennoble man’s existence in relation to death. Yet in a time of crisis, he sought personal advancement, becoming the most prominent German intellectual to join the Nazis. Hannah Arendt, his brilliant, beautiful student and young lover, sought to enable a decent society of human beings in relation to one other. She was courageous in the time of crisis. Years later, she was even able to meet Heidegger once again on common ground and to find in his past behavior an insight into Nazism that...

Bang! I just cut the corner and ran right into this six foot blond guy. I was just about to say Watch where you are going! when I looked up and into the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. I got a tingle in my body. My cheeks flushed red and all I managed to say was a shy Hi. Those same eyes that held so much promise now filled me with nothing but fear and terror. For the first time I could see clearly that I had to leave him. He will never change. If I stay, I will end up dead! I was now ready to leave him but that option wouldn't be easy. When I leave, I need to leave the country and my family in order to stay alive. I will have to find a way to escape from him because he will never let me go. I take that back, he would let me go, if I left in a casket or if I were dead. Deep down, I already had the answer. I knew what I needed to do, but I took my time to ponder my moves and to plan, and let it sink in. I was planning my escape from him and this nightmare. A plan to save my life!
