Interview of Dina Hansma conducted by Albert Winkler on January 30, 2002. A cassette tape and a 34 page typescript of the interview. Hansma's 3 page account called "War Memories of a Child" is included. Hansma discusses how the German occupation of World War II affected her life in the Netherlands. She was eight years old when the war began and thirteen when it ended. Her Jewish neighbors were taken away in trucks. German soldiers came to her house to take food and made her march at gunpoint to get beer. One German soldier came to use her piano. She took care of the garden; it was too dangerous for adults to garden. She also slipped into the German lines twice a week to get milk. At the end of her biography she writes, "Though I was only 13 years old when peace came I had functioned on an adult level for so long, that I could not step back and be a child."

This is the first book solely devoted to single-molecule biochemistry and molecular biology. Authors were selected on the basis of their contribution to this new and exciting field, and were asked to focus more on the biological problems that can be approached using single-molecule techniques rather than on the techniques per se. It is thought that such techniques will eventually dominate the physical characterization of biologically important macromolecules.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Its Application

This book presents a unified view of the rapidly growing field of scanning tunneling microscopy and its many derivatives. After examining novel scanning-probe techniques and the instrumentation and methods, the book provides detailed accounts of STM applications. It examines limitations of the present-day investigations and provides insight into further trends. "I strongly recommend that Professor Bai's book be a part of any library that serves surface scientists, biochemists, biophysicists, material scientists, and students of any science or engineering field...There is no doubt that this is one of the better (most thoughtful) texts." Journal of the American Chemical Society (Review of 1/e)

This exciting new handbook investigates the characterization of surfaces. It emphasizes experimental techniques for imaging of solid surfaces and theoretical strategies for visualization of surfaces, areas in which rapid progress is currently being made. This comprehensive, unique volume is the ideal reference for researchers needing quick access to the latest developments in the field and an excellent introduction to students who want to acquaint themselves with the behavior of electrons, atoms, molecules, and thin-films at surfaces. It's all here, under one cover! The Handbook of Surface Imaging and Visualization is filled with sixty-four of the most powerful techniques for characterizatio...

Tunneling Spectroscopy

This book has been compiled to give specialists, in areas that could be helped by tunneling spectroscopy, a rounded and relatively painless intro duction to the field. Why relatively painless? Because this book is filled with figures-A quick glance through these figures can give one a good idea of the types of systems that can be studied and the quality of results that can be obtained. To date, it has been somewhat difficult to learn about tunneling spectroscopy, as papers in this field have appeared in a diversity of scientific journals: for example. The Journal of Adhesion, J(}urnal (}f Catalysis, Surface and Interface Analysis, Science, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Physical R...

Force Microscopy

A complete examination of the uses of the atomic force microscope in biology and medicine This cutting-edge text, written by a team of leading experts, is the first detailed examination of the latest, most powerful scanning probe microscope, the atomic force microscope (AFM). Using the AFM, in combination with conventional tools and techniques, readers gain a profound understanding of the cell, subcellular organelles, and biomolecular structure and function. The text begins with three chapters describing the molecular machinery and mechanism of cell secretion and membrane fusion in cells, using approaches that combine AFM, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photon correlation spectrosco...

Surface and Thin Film Analysis

Surveying and comparing all techniques relevant for practical applications in surface and thin film analysis, this second edition of a bestseller is a vital guide to this hot topic in nano- and surface technology. This new book has been revised and updated and is divided into four parts - electron, ion, and photon detection, as well as scanning probe microscopy. New chapters have been added to cover such techniques as SNOM, FIM, atom probe (AP),and sum frequency generation (SFG). Appendices with a summary and comparison of techniques and a list of equipment suppliers make this book a rapid reference for materials scientists, analytical chemists, and those working in the biotechnological industry. From a Review of the First Edition (edited by Bubert and Jenett) "... a useful resource..." (Journal of the American Chemical Society)
