"Damn smart folk," Mark grumbled, "That's why I like you, Daryan. Smart, collected-no wonder you're a doctor!" Daryan laughed softly, replying, "I'm no doctor, Mark. Just your friendly neighborhood psychiatrist."" Everyone has issues. Some are easily defined, easily treated, or easily swept under the rug. Others, like the patients of Doctor Daryan Locke, face issues that lie deeper under the surface than they may appear. Doctor Locke has certainly seen his share of patients-everyone from troubled teenagers to master thieves and wedding planners-but their cases always come to a conclusion. And while Daryan is adept at handling his patients, his own troubles may not be so easy to diagnose.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the “Second International Workshop on Cooperative Buildings (CoBuild’99) – Integrating Information, Organizations, and Architecture” held at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh on October 1–2, 1999. The success of the First International Workshop on Cooperative Buildings (CoBuild'98), held at GMD in Darmstadt in February 1998, showed that there is a demand for an appropriate forum to present research about the intersection of information technology, organizational innovation, and architecture. Thus, it was decided to organize a follow-up event. The decision of where to organize CoBuild’99 was straight forward. Since we had many high...

Knowledge Production and Epistemic Decolonization at the End of Pax Americana

This book critically analyzes the global hegemony of the United States – a hegemony whose innovative aspect consists in articulating postcoloniality to imperial control – in relation to knowledge and knowledge production. Through targeted case studies on the historical relationship between regional areas and the United States, the authors explore possibilities and obstacles to epistemic decolonization. By highlighting the connection between the control of work and the control of communication that has been at the core of the colonial regimes of accumulation (‘classic colonialism’), they present an entirely new form of disciplinary practice, not based on the equation of evolution and knowledge. An extensive introduction outlines the historical genealogy of Pax Americana epistemic hegemony, while individual chapters examine the implications for different regions of the world and different domains of activity, including visual culture, economy, migration, the arts, and translation. This interdisciplinary collection will appeal to students and scholars in many fields, including Asian studies, American studies, postcolonialism, and political theory.
