Modern energy access is an important determinant of human health, as it plays a critical role in the capabilities of healthcare facilities and aids in the development of clean and safe household environments. But in the developing world, thousands of healthcare facilities and hundreds of millions of households lack access to modern energy services. And the situation will only get worse as the energy needs of communities and the health sectors in these countries are expected to increase dramatically in the years ahead. This special feature begins with a look at energy access and health implications, along with energy access and reliability gaps, at two levels: electrification of healthcare fa...

Sustainable Energy for All 2013-2014

A team of energy experts from 15 agencies worked under the leadership of the World Bank and the International Energy Agency to produce this comprehensive snapshot of the status of more than 170 countries with respect to energy access, action on energy efficiency and renewable energy, and energy consumption. The report’s framework for data collection and analysis will enable us to monitor progress on the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) objectives from now to 2030. The report also shows how different countries can boost progress toward sustainable energy. Reaching universal energy access depends decisively on actions in some 20 "high-impact" countries in Africa and Asia. Attaining the global objectives for energy efficiency and renewable energy hinges on efforts in some 20 developed and emerging economies that account for 80 percent of global energy consumption. Finally, the report identifies a number of "fast-moving" countries whose exceptionally rapid progress on the triple energy agenda since 1990 provides not just inspiration, but know-how that can help us replicate their success elsewhere.

WHO Urban Health Initiative in Accra, Ghana

Ambient and household air pollution are a major cause of death and disease globally. This public health threat is being increased due to the rapid urbanization process and environmental degradation that characterizes the 21st century and that have a higher impact in developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) Urban Health Initiative (UHI) is implemented as a response to the World Health Assembly (WHA) Resolution 68.8 from May 2015, which requests WHO to build health sector capacity to work with other sectors, support countries to identify effective policy measures, track progress, and continue to update the evidence for health impacts of air pollution. WHO conducted a pilot pro...

Due to the structural flexibility, large surface area, tailorable pore size and functional tenability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can lead to materials with unique properties. This book covers the fundamental aspects of MOFs, their synthesis and modification, including their potential applications in different domains. The major focus is on applications including chemical, biosensors, catalysis, drug delivery, supercapacitors, energy storage, magnetics and their future perspectives. The volume: Covers all aspects related to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including characterization, modification, applications and associated challenges Illustrates designing and synthetic strategies for MOFs Describes MOFs for gas adsorption, separation and purification, and their role in heterogeneous catalysis Covers sensing of different types of noxious substances in the aqueous environment Includes concepts of molecular magnetism, tunable magnetic properties and future aspects This book is aimed at graduate students, and researchers in material science, coordination and industrial chemistry, chemical and environmental engineering and clean technologies.

Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance in health and environment, 2024 update

This is the 2024 update of the Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance on health and environment. The Compendium is a comprehensive collection of available WHO and other UN guidance for improving health by creating healthier environments. It provides an overview and easy access of more than 500 actions, and a framework for thinking about health and environment interventions. It covers a broad range of areas such as air pollution, water, sanitation and hygiene, climate change, chemicals, radiation, or food systems. Guidance is classified according to principal sectors involved, level of implementation (national, community, health care), the type of instrument (taxes, infrastructure etc.) and ...
