Historische Orientierung im Geschichtsunterricht
Geschichtsunterricht soll historische Orientierung ermöglichen. Komplexe Gegenwartsphänomene und ihre Entstehung sollen begreifbar, die Problemlösungen früherer Generationen für das eigene Leben erschließbar, die eigenen Handlungsoptionen am positiven und negativen historischen Vorbild geschärft werden. Die Erfahrungen der Vergangenheit sollen auf die Zukunft vorbereiten. Dieser unterrichtspraktisch angelegte Band fragt nach den Fähigkeiten und Wissensbeständen, die Schülerinnen und Schüler dazu benötigen. Anhand von praktischen Anwendungsbeispielen werden Basisoperationen der Kausalitätszuschreibung, der Bedeutungszuweisung, des historischen Vergleichs, der Unterscheidung von Zeit- sowie Erzählebenen, der Perspektivenübernahme sowie des historischen Urteilens und Bewertens veranschaulicht.
Geschichtsunterricht vor der Frage nach dem Sinn
Sinn führt uns durch das Leben. Aber wie entsteht dieser Sinn und wie bietet er uns Orientierung in der Welt? Welchen Einfluss nimmt er dabei auf unsere historischen Vorstellungen? Und welche Rolle spielt er für das historische Lernen? Solchen Fragen geht dieser Band nach. Er betont dabei die Rolle der unbewussten, intuitiven, motivationalen, ästhetischen, emotionalen und imaginativen Momente stärker, als dies in den klassischen Konzeptionen zur "historischen Sinnbildung" der Fall ist. Es wird unterschieden zwischen einer an Fakten und einer an Handlungen orientierten Art, die Welt zu verstehen. Dies hat Folgen für die Deutung historischer Erzählungen und bietet Möglichkeiten, historisches Lernen für SchülerInnen sinnerfüllter zu gestalten.
Konzepte historischen Denkens und ihre Entwicklungslogik
Konzeptuelles Lernen ist ein vielversprechender Weg, junge Menschen zu wissenschaftsnahem historischem Denken zu führen. Es macht die Lernenden mit den Prinzipien des Faches vertraut und steigert ihre Fähigkeit, historische Sinnzusammenhänge in ihrer ganzen Komplexität zu erfassen. Dieser Band sucht nach den Logiken, die der Entwicklung konzeptueller Vorstelllungen vom Kindergarten- bis zum Erwachsenenalter zugrunde liegen. Er stellt hierzu eine Studie vor, in der 100 ForschungspartnerInnen zu ihren historischen Vorstellungen, Interessen und weiteren flankierenden Aspekten von Geschichtsbewusstsein befragt wurden. Er schlägt zudem ein Untersuchungsmodell vor, das Konzepte unterschiedlicher Ordnungen berücksichtigt, und bietet Übersichten zum fachlichen Conceptual-Change-Diskurs.

Beyond MAUS. The Legacy of Holocaust Comics collects 16 contributions that shed new light on the representation of the Holocaust. While MAUS by Art Spiegelman has changed the perspectives, other comics and series of drawings, some produced while the Holocaust happened, are often not recognised by a wider public. A plethora of works still waits to be discovered, like early caricatures and comics referring to the extermination of the Jews, graphic series by survivors or horror stories from 1950s comic books. The volume provides overviews about the depictions of Jews as animals, the representation of prisoner societies in comics as well as in depth studies about distorted traces of the Holocaust in Hergé's Tintin and in Spirou, the Holocaust in Mangas, and Holocaust comics in Poland and Israel, recent graphic novels and the use of these comics in schools. With contributions from different disciplines, the volume also grants new perspectives on comic scholarship.
Theory of the History Classroom
This volume proposes a theory of history education in formal classroom settings. Specifically, it aims to outline how the particular setting of the classroom interacts with domain-specific processes of historical thinking. The theory rests on the notion that formal school education is a communicative and social system, while historical thinking occurs in the psychological system of a person's historical consciousness. In the complex interaction of these systems, historical thinking, emotions, communication, media and language are of particular importance. Drawing upon educational theory as well as the theory of history, this theory of the history classroom provides a framework as well as a solid foundation for future empirical research, both for developing research questions as well as for interpreting findings.
