A half century of Romance linguistics: Selected proceedings of the 50th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages
The present volume presents a selection of the revised and peer-reviewed proceedings articles of the 50th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL 50) which was hosted virtually by the faculty and students from the University of Texas at Austin. With contributions from rising and senior scholars from Europe and the Americas, the volume demonstrates the breadth of research in contemporary Romance linguistics with articles that apply corpus-based and laboratory methods, as well as theory, to explore the structure, use, and development of the Romance languages. The articles cover a wide range of fields including morphosyntax, semantics, language variation and change, sociophonetics, historical linguistics, language acquisition, and computational linguistics. In an introductory article, the editors document the sudden transition of LSRL 50 to a virtual format and acknowledge those who helped them to ensure the continuity of this annual scholarly meeting.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, AIED 2011, held in Auckland, New Zealand in June/July 2011. The 49 revised full papers presented together with three invited talks and extended abstracts of poster presentations, young researchers contributions and interactive systems reports and workshop reports were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 193 submissions. The papers report on technical advances in and cross-fertilization of approaches and ideas from the many topical areas that make up this highly interdisciplinary field of research and development including artificial intelligence, agent technology, computer science, cognitive and learning sciences, education, educational technology, game design, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and linguistics.

A obra Novos olhares para a gramática do português brasileiro retoma temas que têm recebido atenção de pesquisadores/as brasileiros/as nas últimas décadas, mas que ainda despertam interesse devido à descoberta de novos dados ou devido à possibilidade de novas análises. Bilingüismo dos surdos
Esta obra, resultado do trabalho de pesquisadores renomados, trata da complexa situação lingüística e educacional de bilingüismo da pessoa surda. Para isso, discute problemas relacionados à transcrição das línguas de sinais (em busca de padronização); apresenta, de modo elucidativo as várias questões envolvidas na elaboração dos dicionários bilíngües e semi-bilíngües; analisa questões atinentes a propriedades morfossintáticas da interlíngua de surdos aprendizes de português (escrito), bem como o uso de ferramentas educacionais no desenvolvimento de conceitos científicos no processo de aquisição dessa segunda língua. A discussão acerca da lexicografia mostra as contribuições que os dicionários podem dar aos surdos-aprendizes de português escrito, bem como aos ouvintes-aprendizes de Libras, revelando, ainda, os avanços significativos proporcionados pela informática na representação das línguas de sinais. Aprofundando a compreensão do tema, a obra ressalta a importância da educação lingüística como atributo da cidadania.
Studies on English Modality
Inspired by Frank Palmer's work, this book addresses a set of specific topics pertaining to the description of modality in English and places them in a broader context. A number of more general theoretical and typological matters are also raised, which bear upon the theory of syntax, semantics and pragmatics and their interfaces. The methodology adopted is mostly functional-typological, though some reference is made to various theoretical frameworks, ranging from cognitive linguistics to parametric variation. Modal meanings are seen to extend beyond particular lexical and grammatical exponents, through sentential semantics and into actual contexts of use. At the same time, the study of modality seems to challenge commonly held views on the relationship between different levels of linguistic analysis. Other languages discussed include Brazilian Portuguese, Classical and Modern Greek and Spanish.
Dative constructions in Romance and beyond
This book offers a comprehensive account of dative structures across languages –with an important, though not exclusive, focus on the Romance family. As is well-known, datives play a central role in a variety of structures, ranging from ditransitive constructions to cliticization of indirect objects and differentially marked direct objects, and including also psychological predicates, possessor or causative constructions, among many others. As interest in all these topics has increased significantly over the past three decades, this volume provides an overdue update on the state of the art. Accordingly, the chapters in this volume account for both widely discussed patterns of dative constructions as well as those that are relatively unknown.
