A Japanese wanderer is confused as to why lndonesians say "tak apa-apa"—no problem, it's nothing—for things that are actually problems or something. When commenting on a friend's tardiness, Indonesians will usually say, "It's fine, tak apa-apa." When the bus is late, "tidak apa-apa...." When the internet fails to connect. "tak apa-apa". Through this book, the Japanese wanderer Hisanori Kato shares his private experiences. There are one thousand and one other "oddities" which he discovered as a two-time temporary resident of Indonesia. Respectfully speaking, he still can't wrap his mind around why Indonesians, seen through his Japanese lens at least, don't seem to appreciate time; or how they tend to think "bagaimana nanti"—let's just see what happens later—rather than "nanti bagaimana"—what will happen if I don't do it now. Kato-san is now back home, in Japan. But he can never forget every soul he met in Indonesia. He still misses the warung near his rented house, which he often visited. Jakarta has become his second hometown.

The Handbook of Islamic Sects and Movements offers a multinational study of Islam, its variants, influences, and neighbouring movements, from a multidisciplinary range of scholars. These chapters highlight the diversity of Islam, especially in its contemporary manifestations, as a religion of many communities, theologies, and ideologies. Over five sections—on Sunni, Shia, Sufi, fundamentalist, and fringe Islamic movements—the authors provide historical overviews, analyses, and in-depth studies of large and small Islamic and related groups from all around the world. The contents of this volume will be of interest to both newcomers to the study of Islam and established scholars of religion who wish to engage with the dynamic label of Islam and the many impactful movements of the Islamic world.

Genomics, Proteomics and Metabolomics in Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods

The nutraceutical and functional food field is rapidly growing in diverse sectors, including academic, commercial and government. This has brought a corresponding shift in research focus and in public awareness. Understanding the relevance of the scientific principles in determining the safety and effectiveness of functional foods and nutraceuticals is increasingly important. It is becoming increasingly evident that genomic research technologies will be used in the coming years and there is a need to provide resources that will facilitate this growth. This book incorporates the most recent advances in the three major sectors of the field within one volume. Genomics, proteomics, and metobolomics represent three major scientific research areas that contribute to nutraceutical and functional food research for studies of effectiveness and safety.

This book is a comprehensive synthesis of Japanese civilization in the 21st century. It covers all major elements of this civilization with a strong emphasis on how it can develop further in the future. All nations strive for prominence, but few reach it. Over the last 61 years (1965-2016), Japan has achieved this uncommon status. But, where is Japan heading in the 21st century? This question has been asked since the 1990s; Japan has been in a stagnant-deflation stage and has been looking for all sorts of solutions to return to the prosperous times reflecting Pax Niponnica in the 1970s and 1980s. The context of this situation and some recommendations for the future of Japanese culture are pr...

Molecular and Cellular Biology of Insulin-like Growth Factors and Their Receptors

An essential element in the development and functional integrity of all organisms is intercellular communication. This is achieved by the secretion of soluble messenger molecules which subsequently interact with receptor-effector pathways in the responsive cells. Hormones are traditionally defined as chemical messengers synthesized by endocrine glands. Unlike hormones produced by endocrine glands, growth factors are hormone-related substances produced by many tissues and play an important role in controlling growth and development. While the exact physiological roles of growth factors have yet to be elucidated, they play important roles in the regulation of cellular proliferation and/or diff...

Lessons from Laron Syndrome (LS) 1966-1992

Laron Syndrome (LS) is a disease characterized by resistance to growth hormone (GH) and caused by molecular defects of the GH receptor, leading to a deficiency of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and a significant impairment of growth. The syndrome is a unique human model of a peptide hormone receptor defect and GH-IGF-1 interaction. It offers the opportunity to study the consequences of long-term IGF-1 deficiency and the role of IGF-1 in growth and metabolism. With the recent biosynthesis of IGF-1 and the initiation of IGF-1 therapy, a whole new world of basic biological interactions is opening up. This volume brings together leading researchers in genetics, endocrinology, pediatrics, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology to summarize what is now known about LS, and to discuss the lessons learned from studying and treating this disease since its initial description in 1966. Special features include the demography of LS, and the first data on the long-term IGF-1 treatment of a large group of patients.
