Body Dialectics in the Age of Goethe
In opposition to an essentialist conceptualization, the social construct of the human body in literature can be analyzed and described by means of effective methodologies that are based on Discourse Theory, Theory of Cultural Transmission and Ecology, System Theory, and Media Theory. In this perspective, the body is perceived as a complex arrangement of substantiation, substitution, and omission depending on demands, expectations, and prohibitions of the dominant discourse network. The term Body-Dialectics stands for the attempt to decipher – and for a moment freeze – the web of such discursive arrangements that constitute the fictitious notion of the body in the framework of a specific historic environment, here in the Age of Goethe.

Queering the Canon
This collection of essays exposes points of queerness, marginality, and alterity present in the German canon and introduces further deviation from traditional German literature and culture in the form of openly lesbian and gay works. It provides new queer analyses of texts by canonical authors such as Goethe, Schiller. Thomas and Klaus Mann, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Reinig, and Elfriede Jelinek, yet discusses works that have seldom received scholarly attention. It also breaks the traditional limitation of Germanistik to the study of literature by including essays on aspects of German culture such as music, film, fine art and art history, and politics and law.

The two-volume work Modernism has been awarded the prestigious 2008 MSA Book Prize! Modernism has constituted one of the most prominent fields of literary studies for decades. While it was perhaps temporarily overshadowed by postmodernism, recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in modernism on both sides of the Atlantic. These volumes respond to a need for a collective and multifarious view of literary modernism in various genres, locations, and languages. Asking and responding to a wealth of theoretical, aesthetic, and historical questions, 65 scholars from several countries test the usefulness of the concept of modernism as they probe a variety of contexts, from individual texts to national literatures, from specific critical issues to broad cross-cultural concerns. This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2016. The present e-book contains contributions by scholars from all over the world who gathered to present their research, exchange ideas and comments while advancing discourse on the main topic. The purpose of the book is to analyze the meaning behind different representations of monsters and monstrosity in different types of media and cultural contexts. Two main categories have become the basis for the chapters of the volume: Monsters in Literature and the Monsterization of the Other.
