I boken behandl...

Praise for the First Edition: "Barrie Houlihan's astonishingly ambitious and skilfully assembled collection examines the relations between sport, social policy and the social context that underlies the two. Organized around such themes as exclusion, commercialism and international comparisons, the book allows the reader to understand not only the centrality of sport to contemporary society, but the often perplexing policies that contrive to encourage or deny participation, promote or deter public sector involvement and support or undermine physical education. Importantly, Houlihan never prioritises the general over the particular, always striving to find detail amid the bigger picture." - El...

After Hitler's death, several posthumous books were published which purported to be the verbatim words of the Nazi leader – two of the most important of these documents were Hitler's Table Talk and The Testament of Adolf Hitler. This ground-breaking book provides the first in-depth analysis and critical study of Hitler’s so-called table talks and their history, provenance, translation, reception, and usage. Based on research in public and private archives in four countries, the book shows when, why, where, how, by and for whom the table talks were written, how reliable the texts are, and how historians should approach and use them. It reveals the crucial role of the mysterious Swiss Nazi...

Midnight Basketball

Sport-based intervention programs designed to divert poor minority youth from gangs and crime got their start with the Midnight Basketball initiatives of the late 1980s. Hartmann explains the mystery of why a basketball- based program became popular as a solution to problems of crime and poverty in dozens of American cities. In part, then, this book is a history, but also a cultural analysis to explain the prominence of these programs at first (and then so controversial later on), and how they were expanded upon in the years that followed. In fact, it was in Chicagohome of Michael Jordan and the Bullsthat Midnight Basketball first achieved prominence. Under the direction of former Congressma...

Third Sector Organizations Facing Turbulent Environments

Third Sector Organizations Facing Turbulent Environments

This anthology addresses the topic of change. How do third sector organizations (TSOs) cope with turbulent environments? The book investigates how five European countries manage to adapt to the restructuring of welfare states and the expansion of markets, focusing on the policy fields of sports, culture, and social services. Despite significant differences across countries and policy fields, the book sheds light on a strong trend towards polarization within the third sector. There is indeed a blossoming of grassroots organizations strengthening local cohesion, but these organizations lack any lobbying power. At the same time, powerful not-for-profit organizations, heavily engaged in service provision, have emerged that work on par with commercial and public institutions. These businesslike organizations, however, are detached from any membership base, no longer providing avenues for societal integration.
