The Predatory Paradox

In today’s ‘publish or perish’ academic setting, the institutional prizing of quantity over quality has given rise to and perpetuated the dilemma of predatory publishing. Upon a close examination, however, the definition of ‘predatory’ itself becomes slippery, evading neat boxes or lists which might seek to easily define and guard against it. This volume serves to foreground a nuanced representation of this multifaceted issue. In such a rapidly evolving landscape, this book becomes a field guide to its historical, political, and economic aspects, presenting thoughtful interviews, legal analysis and original research. Case studies from both European-American and non-European-America...

This abnormal growth of cells can form tumors or invade nearby tissues and organs, leading to serious health problems. Cancer can occur in any part of the body and can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. This essay aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cancer, including its causes, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. Medical English as a Lingua Franca

In this first book-length treatment of MELF, the authors assert that MELF represents an important contribution to our understanding of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), in that existing ELF research has been limited to relatively low stakes communicative situations, such as interactions in business, academia, internet blogging or casual conversations. Medical contexts, in contrast, often represent situations calling for exceptional communicative precision and urgency. Providing both evidence from their own research and analysis from (the limited number of) existing studies, the authors offer a counterpoint to the optimism regarding communicative success prevalent in ELF. The book proposes a theoretical perspective on how the various features of healthcare communication serve as important variables in shaping interaction among speakers of ELF, further enlarging our understanding of this emerging sub-field.

How Nurses Can Facilitate Meaning-making and Dialogue

In healthcare, nurses often have a great deal of contact with patients on a 24-hour basis. They are in a position to hear the patient’s stories not only while giving care, but also during more informal communication throughout the day. This puts them in a position to use their response to patients in a more conscious manner and realize therapeutic aims by exploiting narrative means in a methodological way. This book extensively describes how this can be accomplished, not only through a theoretical exposé, but also using case studies. In addition to this pragmatic focus, it explains how narrative relates to larger concepts such as self-management, shared decision making, recovery and person-centred care, and shows that narrative can be a vehicle to these desired outcomes. The book also considers organizational aspects of narrative-oriented healthcare by introducing a model in which narrative plays an important role. As such, it will allow nurses in the field to make a paradigmatic switch from a perspective dominated by delivery of care to one that is person-centred, recovery-oriented and dialogic in nature.
