Proto-Phenomenology, Language Acquisition, Orality and Literacy

Through his innovative study of language, noted Heidegger scholar Lawrence Hatab offers a proto-phenomenological account of the lived world, the “first” world of factical life, where pre-reflective, immediate disclosiveness precedes and makes possible representational models of language. Common distinctions between mind and world, fact and value, cognition and affect miss the meaning-laden dimension of embodied, practical existence, where language and life are a matter of “dwelling in speech.” In this second volume, Hatab supplements and fortifies his initial analysis by offering a detailed treatment of child development and language acquisition, which exhibit a proto-phenomenological world in the making. He then takes up an in-depth study of the differences between oral and written language (particularly in the ancient Greek world) and how the history of alphabetic literacy shows why Western philosophy came to emphasize objective, representational models of cognition and language, which conceal and pass over the presentational domain of dwelling in speech. Such a study offers significant new angles on the nature of philosophy and language.

Social and Academic Abilities in Children with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders

A uniquely comprehensive resource for practitioners, this research-based book addresses both the social-emotional and cognitive-academic challenges faced by children and adolescents with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (HFASD). The author discusses DSM-5 criteria, traces these kids' developmental trajectories, and explores their distinct combination of strengths and needs. Effective school-based interventions for overcoming the social isolation and learning difficulties often associated with HFASD are reviewed in depth. Appendices include concise descriptions of more than 50 relevant assessment tools, plus a detailed, practical outline of the author's empirically supported social intervention model.

Language Development

Erika Hoff's LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT, 5E, International Edition communicates both the content and the excitement of this quickly evolving field. By presenting a balanced treatment that examines all sides of the issues, Hoff helps readers understand different theoretical points of view- and the research processes that have lead theorists to their findings. After an overview and history of the field, Hoff thoroughly covers the biological bases of language development and the core topics of phonological, lexical, and syntactic development. She also provides in-depth discussions of the communicative foundations of language, the development of communicative competence, language development in special populations, childhood bilingualism, and language development in the school years.

The Science and Fiction of Autism

Drawing from her long clinical experience, Laura Schreibman argues that autism is an entirely biological disorder, however complex its neurological origins. She dismisses theories that it is caused by 'refrigerator mothers' or the MMR vaccine, as well as simplistic claims that it can be cured.

When anthropologist Richard Grinker's daughter was diagnosed with autism in 1994, it occurred in only about 1 in every 10,000 children. Within ten years, rates had skyrocketed, and the media was declaring autism an epidemic. Unstrange Minds documents Grinker's quest across the globe to discover the surprising truth about why autism is so much more common today. Grinker shows that the identification and treatment of autism depends on culture just as much as on science. Filled with moving stories and informed by the latest science, Unstrange Minds is a powerful testament to a father's quest for the truth.

Classroom Pivotal Response Teaching for Children with Autism

"Classroom Pivotal Response Teaching, or CPRT, was developed to help meet the educational needs of young children with autism. CPRT (originally called Pivotal Response Training or Treatment) is a form of naturalistic behavioral intervention, based on theprinciples of applied behavior analysis (ABA), and is soundly supported in the scientific literature. This manual will describe the components of CPRT and how to implement the approach in your classroom. Although this manual is geared primarily toward preschool through grade 3 teachers, CPRT strategies can be used by a variety of professionals. Speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavior specialists, psychologists and ...
