ICES Survey Protocols
The impetus for all the beam trawl surveys in this manual is the need for fisheries-independent information on commercial flatfish species. The prime target species and type of beam trawl are set depending on the survey area and/or the relevance of the species for the national or EU fisheries. Nowadays, one of the driving forces for the EU countries involved in the surveys is the data needs specified by DCF (Data Collection Framework). Over time, data collection within the surveys has expanded due both to a shift towards a more ecosystem-related general focus and to new data requests by end-users. As a consequence, the collection of epibenthos data has become more detailed over time and age data are collected for more species than at the time the surveys were developed.
Gonad Development in Plaice (Pleuronectes Platessa) and Sole (Solea Solea) in the North Sea
In recent years aberrant maturity of sole (Solea solea) was recorded in WMR market samples, and during the North Sea beam trawl survey in August 2018 spawning female plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) was caught. These plaice were exceptionally skinny. Although the recordings could have been treated as incidents, it was decided to further examine these signals, and investigate if the maturation cycles in sole and/or plaice are changing. Fish atlas of the Celtic Sea, North Sea, and Baltic Sea
The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology. A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists. The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded. We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.
