In recent years aberrant maturity of sole (Solea solea) was recorded in WMR market samples, and during the North Sea beam trawl survey in August 2018 spawning female plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) was caught. These plaice were exceptionally skinny. Although the recordings could have been treated as incidents, it was decided to further examine these signals, and investigate if the maturation cycles in sole and/or plaice are changing. It was proposed to further look into the gonad development and spawning cycle of plaice and sole in the North Sea. As maturity can only be reliably studied macroscopically in the period directly prior to spawning and during spawning (ICES, 2018), microscopic matu...

The goals of the 2019 dab exchange were (1) an estimation of ageing uncertainty for the dab.27.3a4 stock, (2) compare different preparation methods, and (3) examine seasonality in deposition of opaque/translucent material on the edge of the otolith across a latitudinal gradient. The second and third goals were follow-up actions proposed by the Workshop on Age Reading of Dab in 2015 (WKARDAB2). Sixteen age readers from seven countries (Belgium, France, Iceland, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, England) participated in the exchange. Two sets of otoliths were examined. The first set (SmartDots event 244) consisted of 64 otoliths from ICES Subarea 4 (North Sea) and Division 3a (Skagerrak and Katte...

The Affectionate Shepherd

Despite various influential writers' and critics' high praise of the poetry of Richard Barnfield (1574-1620/26?), his work has long been marginalized in English literary history because of its pervasive homoeroticism. Current interest in literary representations of gender and sexuality, in dissent from dominant ideologies, and in the early modern possibilities of same-sexual subjectivities, accounts for the renewed interest in Barnfield's poetry. This new collection of essays seeks to provide a forum for his evaluation and reinterpretation in accord with his topicality for literary studies today.

Modern medical imaging and radiation therapy technologies are so complex and computer driven that it is difficult for physicians and technologists to know exactly what is happening at the point-of-care. Medical physicists responsible for filling this gap in knowledge must stay abreast of the latest advances at the intersection of medical imaging an

The book encompasses a number of different techniques and approaches that include brachytherapy, intraoperative, and external beam techniques. There is currently no single source that describes these techniques and their clinical implementation.

Tidal Flat Ecology

The tidal coastline presents a fascinating ecological world. Rocky shores with their recurrent zonation of algae and sessile invertebrates demonstrate the orderliness of nature, apparently obeying general explan atory principles. The niche theory could just as well have hatched out of the tight species-packing on the coral reef flats. Fluxes of carbon and nitrogen are best studied in mangroves and salt marshes with their outstanding primary productivity; the bare mud and sands of the tidal flats are different. Their ecological treasures are well concealed, and perhaps not to everybody's taste. Pick up a piece of tidal sediment and see how it resembles a large, rotten cheese! It smells, is sl...

An American Beach for African Americans

In the only complete history of Florida’s American Beach to date, Marsha Dean Phelts draws together personal interviews, photos, newspaper articles, memoirs, maps, and official documents to reconstruct the character and traditions of Amelia Island’s 200-acre African American community. In its heyday, when other beaches grudgingly provided only limited access, black vacationers traveled as many as 1,000 miles down the east coast of the United States and hundreds of miles along the Gulf coast to a beachfront that welcomed their business. Beginning in 1781 with the Samuel Harrison homestead on the southern end of Amelia Island, Phelts traces the birth of the community to General Sherman’s...
