Restructuring and Managing the Enterprise in Transition

Restructuring and Managing the Enterprise in Transition

A wide gap still exists between Western concepts and their application in the ex-socialist countries during transition. Most Western models in financial management make assumptions about the efficiency and stability of markets and the signals that can be obtained and also assume that traditional accounting information is available and can be used for management purposes. A new paradigm is needed to manage the finance function in a transition economy experiencing hyperinflation since stamdard assumptions are not valid in most ex-socialist countries. This book describes the adaptations of financial techniques as it reviews standard financial concepts and tools, adjusts them when necessary to the unique conditions in the ex-socialist enterprises, and then presents the restructuring context and some strategies that are based on the application of these tools.

With the ever-growing landscape of national, state, and local regulations, industry requirements, and increased security threats, ensuring the protection of an organization's information is a key part of operating a successful business. Encrypting "data at rest" is a key element when addressing these concerns. Most storage products offer encryption at an additional cost. As with all of its features, the IBM® XIV® Storage System provides data-at-rest encryption at no charge. This gives clients the opportunity to take advantage of encryption and still enjoy the lower total cost of ownership that XIV offers. This IBM RedpaperTM publication explains the architecture and design of the XIV encryption solution and how it must be configured and implemented. It can help clients and Storage Administrators who want to enable data encryption on XIV storage systems.

Jawlensky The Promised Face

  • Categories: Art

The whole issue of the face is central to the work of Alexei von Jawlensky (1846-1941), this Russian painter who emigrated to Germany. His work hovers between figurative and abstract representation of the face and offers another viewpoint on modernity. How is it that a contemporary painter managed to devote virtually all of his production to the face? How could he choose for his work's paradigm such a traditional form as the icon? Jawlensky exemplifies the artist who participated in modernity without belonging to it and experienced the frontiers between genres. His artistic quest achieved an impossibility: the abstract face.

August 1997 A proposed new form of privatization, IPO-Plus, combines the efficiency of case-by-case privatization with the equity of mass privatization. Every approach to privatization entails tradeoffs. The chief advantage of case-by-case privatization--sales for cash or initial public offerings (IPOs)--efficiency. Case-by-case privatization generates revenues, gives shareholders control over managers, and provides access to capital and skills. But it is slow and does not promote widespread public participation. Voucher-based mass privatization programs, by contrast, are designed to promote equity in the distribution of wealth, through widespread participation. But they do not ensure effici...

Fostering Technology Absorption in Southern African Enterprises

While economic theory considers technological progress to be a key factor for sustained long-term economic growth and job creation, technology absorption is particularly an important driver for 'catch-up growth.' This study seeks to identify channels of technology transfer and absorption for Southern African enterprises, constraints to greater technology absorption, and discuss policy options open to governments and the private sector in light of relevant international experience. It has been done based on sector and enterprise case studies carried in four countries: South Africa, Mauritius, Lesotho and Namibia. This study uses a combination of econometric and in depth case study analyses to...
