Perception of Vehicle Interior Sounds with Electrified Drives

The interior sound of vehicles is a major criterion when buying a new or used vehicle. For both pure-electric and hybrid vehicles, separately audible tonal components severely influence the pleasantness of the interior sound. Previous studies revealed that for sounds of vehicles with electrified drives, besides the tire-road and wind noise components, mainly higher-frequency tonal components influence the pleasantness. Within the present work, the audibility of those components has been determined by a modified version of an auditory masking model. For those vehicles, disturbing sound components are usually prominent during transient driving conditions. Therefore, the temporal changes of psy...

Proton Therapy

Over the past twenty-five years, proton therapy has become more prominent worldwide. It is an important component of clinical radiation therapy for both adult and pediatric clinical care. Due to the inherent ability of protons to spare normal tissue, protons will continue to develop and become increasingly important in radiation oncology. As such, Proton Therapy - Current Status and Future Directions reviews many aspects of proton care including the application of protons in modern clinical trials. It also reviews problems associated with the migration of proton care worldwide and examines the future direction of proton care. This project was created by colleagues at IntechOpen and was caref...

Proton Therapy Physics goes beyond current books on proton therapy to provide an in-depth overview of the physics aspects of this radiation therapy modality, eliminating the need to dig through information scattered in the medical physics literature. After tracing the history of proton therapy, the book summarizes the atomic and nuclear physics background necessary for understanding proton interactions with tissue. It describes the physics of proton accelerators, the parameters of clinical proton beams, and the mechanisms to generate a conformal dose distribution in a patient. The text then covers detector systems and measuring techniques for reference dosimetry, outlines basic quality assur...

The most important radiotherapy modality used today, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), is the most technologically advanced radiotherapy cancer treatment available, rapidly replacing conformal and three-dimensional techniques. Because of these changes, oncologists and radiotherapists need up-to-date information gathered by physicists an

Advances in Radiation Biology, Volume18: Relative Radiation Sensitivities of Human Organ Systems, Part IV focuses on the sensitivity of certain human organ systems to radiation exposure. This book discusses the radiation sensitivity of the prostate and radiation therapy of its tumors; clinical radiobiology and normal-tissue morbidity after breast cancer treatment; and approach to optimal therapy and normal-tissue sparing. The fractionation sensitivity of mammalian tissues; trends for improving radiation sensitivity by counteracting chronic and acute hypoxia; and predictive assays in radiation therapy are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the basic cellular radiobiology and its significance for radiation therapy and classical theoretical approaches to cellular radiosensitivity. This volume is beneficial to clinicians and students intending to gain knowledge of the radiation sensitivities of human organ systems.

It is almost 120 years since Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was first reported, and the concept of managing some of the modifiable risk factors associated with the disease has been present from the outset. Intervening to manage risk factors as a way of tackling AD is not new, but optimizing brain health as a way of minimizing risk and maximizing the potential benefits of revolutionary new treatments for AD is becoming increasingly important. This book, the Handbook of Intervention and Alzheimer’s Disease, presents 47 papers exploring factors which may either inspire or inform future treatment and clinical trials. While novel interventions such as anti-amyloid immunotherapy present great opport...

Evolution of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital

The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has a history of excellence and is internationally recognized as a world class medical center, providing quality medical care, advancing medicine through clinical and laboratory research and facilitating the education of exceptional health care professionals. The Massachusetts General Hospital Radiation Oncology Department, staff, residents and fellows, past and present, concur that MGH stands for Man’s Greatest Hospital. This decidedly immodest assessment is widely viewed amongst this group as being manifestly true, and that perception is clearly reflected in a marvelous esprit de corp. Such an unequivocally positive attitude is solidly based on th...

Innovations in Radiation Oncology

The series "Medical Radiology - Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology" is the successor to the well known "Encyclopedia of Medical RadiologyjHandbuch der medizinischen Radiologie". This international handbook with its unique compila tion of data in more than fifty volumes lags behind the fast developing knowledge in radiology today. "Medical Radiology" brings the state of the art on special topics in a timely fashion. The first volume of the series was "Lung cancer", edited by Scarantino. This volume "Innovation in Radiation Oncology", edited by H.R. Withers and L.J. Peters, presents data on the development of new therapeutic strategies in different oncologic diseases. 57 authors wrote 3...
