Sapeurs
British photographer Tariq Zaidi presents a fashion subculture of Kinshasa & Brazzaville: La Sape, Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes. Its followers are known as 'Sapeurs' ('Sapeuses' for women). Most have ordinary day jobs as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock off they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars - turning heads, bringing 'joie de vivre' to their communities and defying their circumstances.

The individual photographs and groups of works were selected from a variety of submissions and range from classic black-and-white portraits to flashy Photoshop experiments. The focus of artistic interest is always on human subjects in diverse everyday situations, whether sunbathing on the town beach in their spare time, enjoying a breakfast break at a bus station, or as proud war veterans. The pictures paint a timeless and contemporary picture of life in Belarus rather than offering a representative portrayal of day-to-day realities, sometimes with documentary intention, and at other times with an ironic twist. World War II and the defeat of the German occupiers is evidently still today an important "official" theme for Belarusian society, a fact that is visually commented on by the alternative art scene. Ultra Sounds is the first study of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio (PRES), an early 'laboratory' for the production of electronic and electro-acoustic music, and the first of its kind in the Eastern Bloc. This well illustrated book features essays by leading musicologists and architectural, art and film historians, as well as interviews with engineers who worked in the Studio and transcripts of historic lectures and broadcasts by key figures in its history. It offers a comprehensive account of the Studio in the context of the revival of modernist experiment in post-Stalinist Poland in the 1960s.
Niina Vatanen
Time Atlas weaves together images from a variety of sources, from intimate personal archives to Internet imagery, old encyclopaedias, newspapers, guidebooks and manuals. Following an idiosyncratic visual and intuitive logic, Niina Vatanen combines all the different materials creating many new and surprising connections. Inspired by encyclopaedias, Vatanen organises pictures loosely with thematic categories. She is focusing especially on questions concerning time and our perception of it, and exploring how visual memory, personal experience, and history intertwine.
Erik Östensson
The Swedish photographer Erik Ostensson is known for his surrealistic, deceptively simple, and unique pictorial compositions. His poetically performative images reveal an emotional interplay in the depiction of the interaction between people, objects, and landscapes. Everything appears to be interconnected in harmonious coexistence, whereby new relationships in materials and form develop. Ostensson encourages the viewer to discard learned habits of seeing and to look with the eyes of a child who has only just begun to discover the world.
