A starting point and inspiration for the exhibition/symposium was Chris Kraus¿s short text ¿Kelly Lake Store and Other Stories,¿ a text that speaks to the dilemmas of globalization and the growing inequality that the current form of globalized capital is creating. For Kraus, as for philosopher Jeff Malpas, "place" and where you are in the world, matter. In the context of our constant connection through the internet, it can seem as if actual, physical and material place has diminished in importance. The proposition of the exhibition and this publication is, on the contrary, that physical, material place is still of the greatest importance. It still matters, even if the ways that it matters...

Caribbean Nightmare

Horse veterinarian and one-time Navy SEAL Jack Lyttle witnesses a drug trafficking plane attack and shoot down a Drug Enforcement Agency aircraft. The traffickers come back for another run so Jack uses his deer rifle to fend off the drug plane. The shooter drops a cellphone loaded with images and information that Jack gives to the DEA. Several months later, Jack’s plane lands in Minneapolis and picks up what he thinks is his bag: it’s the right color, right shape and has his “J.L.” initials on it. He opens the bag—the combination is one number off—to discover it is filled with woman’s clothing. So begins an adventure that pits a vet and a medical sales rep against two murderous drug cartels. But is everything, and everyone, as they seem? Find out in Caribbean Nightmare.

“The Girl in the Window” and Other True Tales

"A feral child finds a family. An old bottle washes up with a note inside. A boy's stuffed elephant flies out the car window. Over two decades, Lane DeGregory's stories of ordinary people struggling with love and loss, pain and perseverance, have earned her a Pulitzer Prize for feature writing and enhanced the Tampa Bay (formerly St. Petersburg) Times's reputation for publishing pioneering literary nonfiction. DeGregory has also built a worldwide fan base not just among readers of the Times but among journalists and narrative writers of all stripes, who seek out her advice on how to find, report, and write compelling true narratives. This volume collects for the first time twenty-four of her best stories, each accompanied by behind-the-scenes notes about how she convinced that person to speak to her, got that memorable quote, built that evocative scene. The book's unique format makes it both an anthology for readers who love her stories and a guide to craft for those who want to write their own. It includes a foreword by Beth Macy, author of Dopesick, introducing readers who have not yet discovered DeGregory to her creative and inspiring body of work"--

Theorising the Popular

While chiefly a site of popular pleasure and merriment, popular culture also offers a profound sense of meaning-making, where it functions as a site and source through which identities are inhabited, brokered and contested. As a significant domain within contemporary society, popular culture is both shaped by and has the capacity to shape developments occurring at the wider social, cultural and political levels of human life. Taking popular culture seriously – as an arena of everyday life that has merit in its own right – the contributors to this wide-ranging collection of essays offer unique insight into various elements of contemporary popular culture. Drawn from across the humanities ...
