In Visual Cultures of Death in Central Europe, Aleksandra Koutny-Jones explores the emergence of a remarkable cultural preoccupation with death in Poland-Lithuania (1569-1795). Examining why such interests resonated so strongly in the Baroque art of this Commonwealth, she argues that the printing revolution, the impact of the Counter-Reformation, and multiple afflictions suffered by Poland-Lithuania all contributed to a deep cultural concern with mortality. Introducing readers to a range of art, architecture and material culture, this study considers various visual evocations of death including 'Dance of Death' imagery, funerary decorations, coffin portraiture, tomb chapels and religious landscapes. These, Koutny-Jones argues, engaged with wider European cultures of contemplation and commemoration, while also being critically adapted to the specific context of Poland-Lithuania.

We study the dynamics of simple congestion games with two resources where a continuum of agents behaves according to a simplified version of Experience-Weighted Attraction algorithm. The dynamics is characterized by the intensity of choice capturing rationality of the total population of agents and a discount factor capturing a type of memory loss where past outcomes matter exponentially less than the recent ones. Finally, our system adds a third parameter, which captures the asymmetry of the cost functions of the two resources. We show that for any discount factor the system will be destabilized for a sufficiently large intensity of choice, but dependent on the asymmetry of costs, and its relation to the discount factor, the system will stay predictable or become unpredictable and chaotic. Moreover, as memory loss increases the chaotic regime will give place to the attracting periodic orbit of period 2.

We introduce a new class of generalized measures of relative deprivation. The class takes the form of a power mean of order p . A characteristic of the class is that depending on the value of the proximity-sensitive parameter p, the class is capable of accommodating both a decreasing weight (the case of p > 1), and an increasing weight (the case of p∈0,1) ) accorded to given changes in the incomes of the individuals who are wealthier than the reference individual, depending on their proximity in the income distribution to the reference individual.

Measuring Income Inequality in Social Networks

We present a new index for measuring income inequality in networks. The index is based on income comparisons made by the members of a network who are linked with each other by direct social connections. To model the comparisons, we compose a measure of relative deprivation for networks. We base our new index on this measure. The index takes the form of a ratio: the network's aggregate level of relative deprivation divided by the aggregate level of the relative deprivation of a hypothetical network in which one member of the network receives all the income, and it is with this member that the other members of the network compare their incomes. We discuss the merits of this representation. We inquire how changes in the composition of a network affect the index. In addition, we show how the index accommodates specific network characteristics.

We present a theory that systematically and causally links the well-being of native inhabitants with variation in the extent of the assimilation of migrants. Recent empirical findings are yielded as predictions of the theory.

Polish Commonwealth Treasures

This stunning work presents the rarest and most valuable treasures in Polish art collections. It includes paintings, altar panels, secular and religious masterpieces, and manuscripts that date before the invention of moveable type. The pieces in this volume come from Polish and international collections, many of them originally royal or aristocratic in origin.
