First published in 1997, this volume is the result of the third Karlstad symposium which aimed to bring together and reflect current empirical trends and theoretical discussions on the questions: what exactly is happening to work and, consequentially, what should happen to work? This book disseminates contributions from seventeen scientists from eleven countries to a wider audience. It should prove stimulating to postgraduates, researchers, policy-makers and others to encourage further work on conditions both at work and on the labour market.
Supported bilaterally by Sweden and Norway, the Scandinavian Action Research Development Program (ACRES Action Research in Scandinavia) emphasized conceptualizing research questions and self-conscious writing processes for experienced action researchers. Participants came from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Great Britain, and the United States. A learning experiment in the tradition of Scandinavian industrial democracy, ACRES had both intellectual and organizational tensions common to action research projects. This book includes theoretical and historical overviews of action research, reflections on the writing process, narratives about the design and difficult internal processes of ACRES, and a selection of the participants' writings. A particularly unique feature of the book is the discussion of the problematic relationship between action research and conventional modes of research writing and an analysis of the complex social processes collaboratively managed projects create, in combination with a set of participant cases.

While the need to utilise knowledge from social research in processes of development in working life is growing, there is also a growing recognition of the problems posed by this utilisation. As the belief in universal reason and general theory about topics like work organization and leadership has faded, research has to find a place as a local development actor. As such it is part of broad groups of actors, or development coalitions, as they are called in this book. Each coalition acquires unique characteristics and demands unique contributions from participating researchers. At the same time there is still a need for generalisable knowledge since all local processes are linked to global ones. Using an ongoing research-supported development program in Norwegian working life as the basis, this book explores the issues and problems associated with a new role for research as a mediator, not between general theory and local application, but between local workplace actors and global trends. The program in case encompasses a substantial number of enterprises many of them organized in networks and more than 50 researchers organized in seven groups, or modules.
None
