Continuum Mechanics Through the Twentieth Century
This overview of the development of continuum mechanics throughout the twentieth century is unique and ambitious. Utilizing a historical perspective, it combines an exposition on the technical progress made in the field and a marked interest in the role played by remarkable individuals and scientific schools and institutions on a rapidly evolving social background. It underlines the newly raised technical questions and their answers, and the ongoing reflections on the bases of continuum mechanics associated, or in competition, with other branches of the physical sciences, including thermodynamics. The Peregrine Profession
In The Peregrine Profession Per-Olof Grönberg offers an account of the pre-1930 transnational mobility of engineers and architects educated in the Nordic countries 1880-1919. Outlining a system where learning mobility was more important than labour market mobility, the author shows that more than every second graduate went abroad. Transnational mobility was stronger from Finland and Norway than from Denmark and Sweden, partly because of slower industrialisation and deficiencies in the domestic technical education. This mobility included all parts of the world but concentrated on the leading industrial countries in German speaking Europe and North America. Significant majorities returned and became agents of technology transfer and technical change. Thereby, these mobile graduates also became important for Nordic industrialisation
Creep in Structures
The Third IUTAM Symposium on Creep in Structures was held at Leicester University in September 1980 thereby continuing the tradition of a ten yearly review of progress in structural creep initiated by the previous symposia held at Stanford University in 1960 and Chalmers University in 1970. The thirty eight papers and their discussions cont ained in this volume testify to the vigour of research into the creep of structures at the present time. During the last ten years a gradual change of emphasis has occurred in creep research from studies of deformation and stability towards the description of continuum damage and creep crack propagation. At the same time design techniques have developed based upon reference stress techniques and bounding theorems, and a continued interest has been maintained in the development of constitutive equations and in stability studies. All these developments are reflected in the compos ition of the papers in the volume and in the discussions and reviews.
Risks in Technological Systems
"Risks in Technological Systems" is an interdisciplinary university textbook and a book for the educated reader on the risks of today’s society. In order to understand and analyze risks associated with the engineering systems on which modern society relies, other concerns have to be addressed, besides technical aspects. In contrast to many academic textbooks dealing with technological risks, this book has a unique interdisciplinary character that presents technological risks in their own context. Twenty-four scientists have come together to present their views on risks in technological systems. Their scientific disciplines cover not only engineering, economics and medicine, but also history, psychology, literature and philosophy.
