Titanic continues to capture the popular imagination even 100 hundred years after her tragic loss in the North Atlantic in 1912. However much of that focus is on the disparity between the survival rates of the first and third class passengers and the loss of the rich and famous on board. Often overlooked are the crew of the Titanic of whom four out of five lost their lives in the disaster. James Cronan and Janet Dempsey have used the original Titanic crew records held at the National Archives to attempt to redress this balance, not only looking at the crew who lost their lives but also following the fate of those who survived and in many cases actually carried on a career at sea.

The rich, untold origin story of the ubiquitous web cookie—what’s wrong with it, why it’s being retired, and how we can do better. Consent pop-ups continually ask us to download cookies to our computers, but is this all-too-familiar form of privacy protection effective? No, Meg Leta Jones explains in The Character of Consent, rather than promote functionality, privacy, and decentralization, cookie technology has instead made the internet invasive, limited, and clunky. Good thing, then, that the cookie is set for retirement in 2024. In this eye-opening book, Jones tells the little-known story of this broken consent arrangement, tracing it back to the major transnational conflicts around...

The Revolutionary War was nearing its end in early 1783. In his Hudson Highlands stronghold, General Washington kept a wary eye on the British force in New York City, 60 miles away. His army, owed months of back pay, and his officers frustrated by the negotiations over their promised pension, chafed under martial authority. A nationalist faction in Congress seized upon this discontent to instigate the Newburgh Conspiracy, a plot by Continental Army officers to menace civil officials who opposed the Impost, a 5% tax on imports to be collected by the central government, to satisfy the nation's debts. The army--by this time a formidable force of seasoned veterans--was provoked into threatening the very liberties it had fought to defend. This book examines this last major crisis of the Revolution, when Washington stood between his men and the American people.

In 1840 the Anglicans of Cartwright Township, northeast of Toronto, gathered in the homes of the faithful. By 1851 they had built a church a mile east of the village of today's Blackstock. That church was destroyed by fire in 1876 and a new church, the present building, was erected on the eastern edge of the village. By 1880 there were nine churches of varying denominations in the township. Today only three remain, one of which is St. John's Blackstock. The hardy pioneers of all faiths in Cartwright Township, have shared in the struggles of creating and sustaining their communities through turbulent times and dramatic changes. This book is the story of their struggles and is written as part of the celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of that first Anglican congregation....
