Local Government Management

In a recent paradigm shift, local governments find themselves shouldering more responsibility for day-to-day governance and crisis management, thanks to regulations and federal spending cuts. While 20 years ago a book on local government administration might have been considered complete with chapters on budgeting, public personnel management, productivity and responsivity, and community engagement, any discussion of local government must now also include resilience, emergency management, climate change, smart cities, social media, and infrastructure funding. Bringing together key voices from the academic and public sectors, Local Government Management offers techniques and insight into how ...

The global trend toward urbanization, combined with innovations in information and communications technologies, has resulted in a movement to revolutionize local governments through digital transformations of communities to become "smart." As these communities update and improve local processes and infrastructure, urban planners and city leaders have sought to include community members in local planning processes through access to public information. This objective often has been operationalized through open data portals, which serve as publicly accessible repositories for smart city data. However, despite the initial promise of such data portals, reports have found that use cases are limite...

Australia’s long-standing strategic relationship with the United States is transforming. Two factors are driving this change. First is the pace and intensity of global geostrategic change centred on the Indo-Pacific. Second, the United States remains consumed by a fractious debate about its role in the world and almost paralysed by disunity. While policy elites from both sides of American politics aspire to make the Indo-Pacific the primary geostrategic focus of the United States, policy detail and tangible action is slow to emerge. Domestic politics, Europe and the Middle East compete with the Indo-Pacific for US strategic and operational focus. This was true under the Obama administration, the Trump administration and remains our assessment today, just over a year into the Biden administration. The Quad and AUKUS are welcome and positive developments, but work is still needed to realise their potential for contributing to Australian security and prosperity. This volume, State of the United States: Biden’s agenda in the balance, analyses these drivers for change and the resulting implications for Australia.

US-China Global Maritime Relations

This book explores the U.S.-China maritime relationship, examining the development and implementation of the maritime strategies of both the United States and China. Delving into the U.S.-China maritime relationship within the global context, the book investigates six key maritime regions: the South China Sea, the Northeast Asia waters (the East China Sea, the Yellow Sea), the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific Ocean, as well as the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Its observations form a comprehensive exploration of these regions and their significance in shaping the dynamics between the two nations, and this analysis reveals that an expanded view is necessary to discover and clearly display the role that these maritime regions currently—and could potentially—play in overarching U.S.-China relations. Examining both the ongoing conflicts and opportunities for cooperation in the global maritime domain between the United States and China, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of international relations, Chinese and U.S. politics, strategic studies, and maritime studies.
