Greek Identity in the Western Mediterranean
The Greek colonies of the Western Mediterranean were central to the evolution of many aspects of Greek culture and in many cases developed an identity which was significantly different from that of mainland Greece and the Aegean. This volume seeks to explore aspects of the cultural identity of these colonies and how it evolved. It covers the colonial foundations in Italy, Sicily, Southern France, Spain and North Africa, and ranges from the 8th century BC to the early Roman empire. Topics covered include the ethnic identity of the earliest colonial foundations, the evolution of Greek states in the West, the Greeks' perceptions of their own identity and ways of representing it, and the role of the indigenous populations in the evolution of Western Greek culture.
Lived Religion in the Ancient Mediterranean World
The Lived Ancient Religion project has radically changed perspectives on ancient religions and their supposedly personal or public character. This volume applies and further develops these methodological tools, new perspectives and new questions. The religious transformations of the Roman Imperial period appear in new light and more nuances by comparative confrontation and the integration of many disciplines. The latter appears as something that has always existed and, therefore, denies any notion of the invention of a syllable and its corollary, the spelling. Could the linear alphabetic writing, the Kaabaean, not have been used immediately as soon as man appeared at a very remote time that the scientific community called prehistory? The diffusion of Scripture is a long process that has taken place for tens of thousands of years as has been the one of human migration from its point of origin. Thus, throughout these tens of millenia BC, along with migratory movements, scripture had spread geographically in cultural areas that would become very different between them and, therefore, very distinct from its Original frame.

Led by an egalitarian mindset, Greeks drew lots as a matter of course to distribute inheritance, booty, sacrificial meat, and lands, to mix groups, select individuals, and set turns.
