Expertise and Technology

Technological development has changed the nature of industrial production so that it is no longer a question of humans working with a machine, but rather that a joint human machine system is performing the task. This development, which started in the 1940s, has become even more pronounced with the proliferation of computers and the invasion of digital technology in all wakes of working life. It may appear that the importance of human work has been reduced compared to what can be achieved by intelligent software systems, but in reality, the opposite is true: the more complex a system, the more vital the human operator's task. The conditions have changed, however, whereas people used to be in ...

Psychology of Programming

Psychology provides a backdrop for most of the study of human*b1computer interaction. In this volume the psychological issues that pertain to programming, rather than systems design, are examined in four sections: Theoretical and Methodological Issues; Language Design and Skill Acquisition; Expert Programming; and the Future.****The book was inspired by working groups in France and the United Kingdom but also includes work by major North American figures (such as Curtis and Soloway). It is the first comprehensive work on this topic since the early 1980s.

The concept of planning occurs in a variety of academic contexts and forms, not least in the cognitive psychology of problem solving and in computing science. Although disparate theoretical contexts may be an obstacle to defining the invariants of planning, they become a rich resource when the aim is to provide a description of its general properties. As the cognitve sciences pool resources from psychology to artificial intelligence, reflections on common concepts becomes a necessity. The aim of this book is to furnish a theoretical framework for current planning research in both cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence. It is unique in its integrated and interdisciplinary perspective and is a useful asset to those working in psychology, artificial intelligence, cognitive ergonomics, human-computer interaction, and related disciplines.

Behavioral Operations in Planning and Scheduling

Human and organizational factors have a substantial impact on the performance of planning and scheduling processes. Despite widespread and advanced decision support systems, human decision makers are still crucial to improve the operational performance in manufacturing industries. In this text, the state of the art in this area is discussed by experts from a wide variety of engineering and social science disciplines. Moreover, recent results from collaborative studies and a number of field cases are presented. The text is targeted at researchers and graduate students, but is also particularly useful for managers, consultants, and system developers to better understand how human performance can be advanced.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been much in the news recently, with some commentators expressing concern that AI might eventually replace humans. But many developments in AI are designed to enhance and supplement the performance of humans rather than replace them, and a novel field of study, with new approaches and solutions to the development of AI, has arisen to focus on this aspect of the technology. This book presents the proceedings of HHAI2023, the 2nd International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence, held from 26-30 June 2023, in Munich, Germany. The HHAI international conference series is focused on the study of artificially intelligent systems that cooperate synerg...

This three volume set provides the complete proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction held August, 2001 in New Orleans. A total of 2,738 individuals from industry, academia, research institutes, and governmental agencies from 37 countries submitted their work for presentation at the conference. The papers address the latest research and application in the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. Those accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, including the cognitive, social, ergonomic, and health aspects of work with computers. The papers also address major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of diversified application areas, including offices, financial institutions, manufacturing, electronic publishing, construction, and health care.
