Lynn

Lynn was settled only nine years after the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth. It quickly became renowned for its shoe shops (or "ten footers"), and almost every family in town became involved in some way in the shoe-manufaturing process. Lynn's citizens have always been an industrious lot, and they soon built their small town into a city of prosperity. By 1850, with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution and the influx of many immigrants from Europe, Lynn had grown into a booming city known as the "Shoe Capital of Massachusetts." This fascinating new book chronicles Lynn's colorful history, from the 1850s, when the city entered the industrial age, to the 1950s. More than two hundred blac...

Moving the Mountain

Moving the Mountain tells the story of the struggles and triumphs of thousands of activists who achieved "half a revolution" between 1960 and 1990. In this award-winning book, the most complete history of the women's movement to date, Flora Davis presents a grass-roots view of the small steps and giant leaps that have changed laws and institutions as well as the prejudices and unspoken rules governing a woman's place in American society. Looking at every major feminist issue from the point of view of the participants in the struggle, Moving the Mountain conveys the excitement, the frustration, and the creative chaos of feminism's Second Wave. A new afterword assesses the movement's progress in the 1990s and prospects for the new century.

Pepperell

Settlers arrived in Pepperell as early as 1655, attracted by good farmland and the waters of the Nashua and Nissitissit Rivers. In a petition granted in 1742 by the general court, the area today recognized as Pepperell became known as Groton West Parish. Eventually the town was named in honor of Sir William Pepperell of Kittery, Maine. The settlers of Pepperell were patriotic and hardworking. Colonel William Prescott served admirably in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and in the late nineteenth century the town became well known for its very prosperous paper-making industry. Pepperell also came to attract visitors in the mid-nineteenth century, as it was home to five stagecoach relay stops and the Babbatassett Driving Park. In this marvelous new photographic history, author Joanne Saunders Foley chronicles the development of Pepperell from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Come along and enjoy vintage views of celebrations, parades, and firemens' musters, and read all about the "witch" of North Pepperell. This marvelous new book gives form to many of the people, places, and events that have contributed to the history of the town.
