Thy Will be Done

Born in 1867 just west of Hayesville, North Carolina, George W. Truett grew up to be one of the outstanding Baptist preachers of the twentieth century. He moved to Whitewright, Texas, in 1889 and planned to practice law. His Baptist church in Whitewright, however, ordained him to the ministry in 1890, ignoring his vigorous protest against such action. (18971944) as the church's pastor. Best known for his advocacy of religious liberty, Truett also helped found Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Less known about Truett was his understanding of stewardship. Money meant nothing to him, and in twenty-three of his forty-seven years in Dallas, he led his church to spend more money on missions and benevolences than on its own ministries.

The Woman I Am

She examines magazines published by Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU), an auxiliary to the SBC: Our Mission Fields (1906–1914), Royal Service (1914–1995), Contempo (1970–1995), and Missions Mosaic (1995–2006). In them, she traces how WMU writers and editors perceived, constructed, and expanded the lives of southern women. Showing ingenuity and resiliency, these writers and editors continually, though not always consciously, reshaped their ideal of Christian womanhood to better fit the new paths open to women in American culture and Southern Baptist life. Maxwell’s work demonstrates that Southern Baptists have transformed their views on biblically sanctioned roles for women over a relatively short historical period. How Southern Baptist women perceive women’s roles in their churches, homes, and the wider world is of central importance to readers interested in religion, society, and gender in the United States.

These sketches were first written as a contemporary pen picture of the ministry of the greatest modern preacher. Their composition was in September, 1941, following the completion of the forty-fourth year of Dr. Truett's pastorate in Dallas, the articles appearing serially at the time in "Southern Baptist Home Missions." Since Dr. Truett's death, July 7, 1944, the material has been revised and brought up to date. The example of Dr. Truett's prodigious ministry, one must feel, will ever be an inspiration to evangelical Christendom. His diligence in business, his earnestness of purpose, and his fervency of spirit will always challenge preachers to give their best to the Gospel. In the hope of capturing on paper something of the magnanimity of his spirit these pages were written. If through their reading anyone should experience a new devotion to the Saviour's service, our mission will have been accomplished. Joe W. Burton

We Confess!

How could a church culture that lifted high the name of Jesus make covenant with the Confederacy? How did the Southern Baptist Convention lead the way? How do divided hearts and unholy covenants still hinder awakening in the conservative US church culture? What dramatic changes will a spirit of grace and supplication bring? We Confess! The Civil War, the South, and the Church uncovers the answers, historically and biblically. God is revealing what we haven't wanted to see, so we can become who we truly are. He promises to cleanse us from bloodguilt not yet cleansed, as we say what we haven't dared say. As we confess, healing, life, oneness, witness and true worship flow. As we confess, our L...

Principles of Plant Genetics and Breeding

To respond to the increasing need to feed the world's population as well as an ever greater demand for a balanced and healthy diet there is a continuing need to produce improved new cultivars or varieties of plants, particularly crop plants. The strategies used to produce these are increasingly based on our knowledge of relevant science, particularly genetics, but involves a multidisciplinary understanding that optimizes the approaches taken. Principles of Plant Genetics and Breeding, 2nd Edition introduces both classical and molecular tools for plant breeding. Topics such as biotechnology in plant breeding, intellectual property, risks, emerging concepts (decentralized breeding, organic bre...

Rebuilding Zion

Rebuilding Zion

Both the North and the South viewed the Civil War in Christian terms. Each side believed that its fight was just, that God favored its cause. Rebuilding Zion is the first study to explore simultaneously the reaction of southern white evangelicals, northern white evangelicals, and Christian freedpeople to Confederate defeat. As white southerners struggled to assure themselves that the collapse of the Confederacy was not an indication of God's stern judgment, white northerners and freedpeople were certain that it was. Author Daniel W. Stowell tells the story of the religious reconstruction of the South following the war, a bitter contest between southern and northern evangelicals, at the heart...

Distinctively Baptist Essays on Baptist History

This collection of essays by different authors is presented as a tribute to Walter B. "Buddy" Shurden, (distinctively Baptist) church historian, teacher, preacher, author, Baptist apologist extraordinaire. The rationale of this celebration of the lifework and influence of Walter Shurden is well stated, for example, in editor Marc Jolley's preface: "[D]uring some of the initial forays of our most-recent and ongoing Fundamentalist-Moderate controversy, there were days when I thought about changing denominations. Shurden's works were instrumental in my remaining a Baptist, not because I could see how Baptists had always had controversies and survived--although that is true--but because he helpe...
