Empowering Teachers Across Europe to Deal with Social, Emotional and Diversity-Related Challenges

The increase in reported levels of stress and burnout in teachers across Europe highlights the importance of teachers' social and emotional competencies and diversity awareness (SEDA). Since teaching is an extremely social and emotional process where diversity, if recognised, is embraced at every step, we believe that supporting teachers to develop SEDA competencies is the key to shaping not only the positive relationships of living and learning together in classrooms, but also, in living and learning together in society. Once SEDA competencies are supported, a positive shift can occur at the level of individual teacher, classroom, school and society level. The book is our way of experimentally demonstrating how teachers' SEDA can be supported across Europe (Volume I) and how policy can support these processes (Volume II). Volume I focuses on the innovative conceptual overlap of social and emotional competencies and diversity awareness and experimentally test it across European countries - with an emphasis on conceptualisation, implementation and evaluation processes.

German education plays a huge role in the development of education sciences and modern universities internationally. It is influenced by the educational concept of Bildung, which defines Germany ‘s theoretical and curricular ventures. This concept is famously untranslatable into other languages and is often misinterpreted as education, instruction, training, upbringing and other terms which don’t encompass its cultural ambitions. Despite this hurdle, Bildung is now being recognized in current discussions of education issues such as standardization, teaching to the test, evidence-based policy and high stakes testing. This volume clears up the confusion and misunderstandings surrounding Bildung by examining the origins of the concept and how it has been applied throughout history. It paves the way for educators to fully understand and benefit from this model and all it has to offer.

Modeling and Measuring Competencies in Higher Education

Measuring competencies acquired over the course of higher education is an area of research that largely has been neglected. This deficit can be attributed to the complexity of academic competencies since the variety of institutions, programs, occupational fields and job requirements render it difficult to define and even harder to measure outcomes. Thus, assessing the preconditions for and effects of competency development is a challenge methodologically. In this book, a comprehensive review of the international state of research on modeling and measuring competencies in higher education across several academic disciplines is presented, along with an evaluation of the field’s strengths and...
