Visual Culture Wars at the Borders of Contemporary China
This edited collection brings together essays that share in a critical attention to visual culture as a means of representing, contributing to and/or intervening with discursive struggles and territorial conflicts currently taking place at and across the outward-facing and internal borders of the People’s Republic of China. Elucidated by the essays collected here for the first time is a constellation of what might be described as visual culture wars comprising resistances on numerous fronts not only to the growing power and expansiveness of the Chinese state but also the residues of a once pervasively suppressive Western colonialism/imperialism. The present volume addresses visual culture related to struggles and conflicts at the borders of Hong Kong, the South China Sea and Taiwan as well within the PRC with regard the so-called “Great Firewall of China” and differences in discursive outlook between China and the West on the significances of art, technology, gender and sexuality. In doing so, it provides a vital index of twenty-first century China’s diversely conflicted status as a contemporary nation-state and arguably nascent empire.

Jia Aili
The work of the Chinese artist Jia Aili (*1979 in Liaoning) possesses an unparalleled intensity. Whether reflecting on China's inauguration of the atomic bomb or the first satellites in 1970, the theme of Aili's oil paintings is the dramatic transformation of Chinese society over the past 50 years. The works simultaneously also convey a feeling of wonderment and fascination for the achievements and new possibilities that technological progress offers. It is a feeling Aili has particularly developed in his apocalyptic-seeming desert landscapes, which only allow space for isolated masked figures, usually astronauts. The monograph documents Aili's exhibitions over the past 10 years and shows the young Chinese artist's disparate sources of inspiration with the aid of discussions of individual works.

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance
Highlights from 20 years of furniture and product design by leading French luminary Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance Designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance's (born 1974) training in both sculpture and furniture design is evident throughout his eclectic body of work. His architectural designs, seen in places such as the Sketch restaurant in London or the Air France business lounge at Paris-Charles de Gaule airport, evoke the natural movement of water and wind with curved edges and smooth surfaces. Each piece of furniture in Duchaufour-Lawrance's oeuvre, whether it be a chair, lamp or sofa, is characterized by a clear attention to the piece's overall dramatic effect as well as a fine craftsmanship in every detail. Most recently, he collaborated with the crystal manufacturer Saint-Louis to create the Folia collection of luxury lighting fixtures and furniture. This publication presents a number of Duchaufour-Lawrance's most striking designs, and reveals his new project in which he deftly combines design with craftmanship.
