El volumen que se presenta reúne una serie de trabajos escritos por especialistas de diversas instituciones académicas y científicas procedentes de distintos países iberoamericanos. Fueron convocados bajo una consigna general muy amplia. La idea era que este volumen tratara problemáticas relativas a lo que los procesos independentistas habían dejado o traído consigo. Dicha convocatoria fue decantando en la cuestión de las reformas genéricamente denominadas liberales por la historiografía y en cómo éstas se fueron plasmando en diversas fases y momentos en cada una de las sociedades emergentes después de las revoluciones. En ese sentido, el volumen está formado por capítulos que abordan diversas problemáticas locales y globales de los territorios del imperio español y lusitano, a partir de la crisis de las respectivas Monarquías y durante todo el siglo XIX

Libros, negocios y educación es un estudio sobre la importación de libros de Gran Bretaña a Hispanoamérica en los primeros años de vida independiente. Se centra en la empresa multinacional de Rudolph Ackermann, que dominaba el mercado de libros británicos en español, con una amplia circulación e incidencia en la cultura impresa de las naciones americanas emergentes. La autora analiza cómo la materialidad de los libros afectó el conocimiento que transmitían y explora el papel que desempeñaron en la formación de nuevas identidades sociales y nacionales. Esta obra pionera es una contribución fundamental al enfoque de las historias conectadas en el periodo de las revoluciones de independencia americana. Muestra cómo la circulación y el comercio de libros es crucial para entender las relaciones económicas, culturales y educativas en el mundo Atlántico: estas no fueron unidireccionales entre el centro y la periferia del mundo occidental, sino caminos de ida y vuelta. Analiza también cómo los textos escolares adquirieron características materiales específicas que se extendieron mundialmente en forma de modelos pedagógicos transnacionales.

Layered Inequalities
In Colombia, since the 1990s, thousands of Afro-descendants have benefited from collective land rights. However, many peasants have been violently displaced in order to introduce industrial crops, while several other groups of peasants resisted these agribusiness land grabs. This book examines the layered inequalities in this process and analyzes the various paradoxes of recent Colombian development policies: the agribusiness expansions through land grabs; the land and labor conflicts that have overlapped in regions with agribusiness; and both the Afro-descendants and mestizos demand for land rights.
