The Road to Marriage Equality

In Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), the Supreme Court of the United States held that same-sex couples throughout the country had the right to marry. The ruling was the culmination of a decades-long struggle to gain the legal right for gay and lesbian couples to wed. This compelling book takes the reader through the ups and downs of the marriage equality movement, from the 1990s to the current era, from the first same-sex couples to have their marriage license applications rejected to the changing attitudes that led to every individual having the right that was once reserved only for some.

Energy Losses in Big Woodworking Machines

This monograph presents research related to big woodworking machines and, in particular, research related to big circular and big band saw machines. These machines are characterized by their size, which creates problems both in their design, and during their normal operation. Big static and dynamic loads occur during the technological process of sawing. These loads give rise to deformations of the main links of the machines. The final result is increased electricity consumption. The monograph includes four chapters. In the first chapter, the influence of static and dynamic loads on the main links of machines is investigated. In the second chapter, transverse vibrations and spatial deformations of machine shafts are investigated. In the third chapter, deformation checks are made, which can prevent damages in machines. In the fourth chapter, the kinetic energy losses of the two classes of machines are investigated. The main purpose of these studies is to propose optimization solutions that lead to the minimization of energy losses.

Integrating Research and Education

The workshop summary provides guidance for researchers applying to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for funding. New NSF guidelines require applications to address the "broader impact" of the proposed research. Presentations at the workshop provided ideas on how to do this by engaging in undergraduate education, K-12 education or public outreach via museums or journalists. The workshop summary discusses issues to consider in choosing an appropriate collaborator for the education or outreach component of the project and how to build in methods for assessing the success of the project. It also provides lists of resources helpful in writing education proposals and discusses the similarities between research in education and scientific research.

Marriage Discourses

Marriage was historically not only a romantic ideal, but a tool of exploitation of women in many regards. Women were often considered commodities and marriage was far away from the romantic stereotypes people relate to it today. While marriages served as diplomatic tools or means of political legitimization in the past, the discourses about marital relationships changed and women expressed their demands more openly. Discourses about marriage in history and literature naturally became more and more heated, especially during the "long" 19th century, when marriages were contested by social reformers or political radicals, male and female alike. The present volume provides a discussion of the role of marriage and the discourses about in different chronological and geographical contexts and shows which arguments played an important role for the demand for more equality in martial relationships. It focuses on marriage discourses, may they have been legal or rather socio-political ones. In addition, the disputes about marriage in literary works of the 19th and 20th centuries are presented to complement the historical debates.

The future of the sociologist's profession is jeopardized by an ongoing trend toward the politicization of sociology and the radicalization of social problems. This book calls for the rethinking of the culture of social, political, and economic liberty to create a resurgence of a sociological agenda. This book is a vision for reinvigorating the discipline in a fashion undreamt of within the wearisome strains of today's radical social problems theory.
