Ten European artists of international renown were invited to create new, original contribution to the topic "automobile" using film or photography: Heile Baranowsky, Thomas Demand, Rineke Dijkstra, Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani, Candida Hofer, Boris Michailov, Johannes Muggenthaler, Ursula Rogg, Thomas Struth and Alexander Timtschenko. The outcomes consist of highly individual works offering a cross section of contemporary photography, powerful and many-faceted as artistic visions and ranging from Thomas Demand is abstracting spatial aesthetics to the concrete critical approach of Ursula Rogg or Alexander Timtschenko.
Ten artists working in photography - Todd Eberle, Noritoshi Hirakawa, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Glenn Ligon, Sharon Lockhart, Catherine Opie, Paul Seawright, Beat Streuli, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Gillian Wearing - were commissioned by BMW Financial Services to create new photographic works that would explore the products, image, and corporate culture of BMW.

Architecture of Absence examines Hofer's unique oeuvre and the relationship of her architecture work to that of the "Becher Circle"-noted students of the Dusseldorf Academy's renowned professor Bernd Becher, including Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, and Axel Hutte.
