This penetrating collection of papers, presents a wealth of detailed information on Mexico’s record in recent years in the realms of crime (especially drug trafficking), political corruption, and human rights abuses, and examines the links between these areas and Mexico’s well-known economic indicators. The authors, many of whom are Mexican, draw on a wide variety of domestic and international sources, including internal Mexican studies (both governmental and non-governmental), reports and studies from international organizations such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States, and reports from Human Rights Watch/Americas. Mexico: Facing the Challenges of Human Rights and Crime was sponsored by the International Human Rights Law Institute of DePaul University College of Law. Sops That Operators Will Actually Want to Use

In the oil and gas industry, SOPs are frequently developed late in the project when construction is well underway - too late to impact the design. They may be used for little other than operator training and following startup they often end up on a shelf collecting dust. Contrast this with the airline industry, where SOP use has dramatically decreased the frequency and impact of accidents. That industry has created a culture and expectation of following procedures. They use SOPs for normal events - takeoff and landings - and in response to emergencies. Learnings are effectively incorporated into their SOPs. It is hard to imagine ever having such devotion to SOPs in the oil and gas industry, but it is something we should strive for. Effective SOPs that are diligently used by operators may be the driver for the next step change in process safety in the industry. But this cannot reasonably be accomplished unless we start writing procedures that are more user-friendly. We must start writing SOPs that the operators will actually want to use.

Injection of CO{sub 2} in coalbeds is a plausible method of reducing atmospheric emissions of CO{sub 2}, and it can have the additional benefit of enhancing methane recovery from coal. Most previous studies have evaluated the merits of CO{sub 2} disposal in high-rank coals. The objective of this research was to determine the technical and economic feasibility of CO{sub 2} sequestration in, and enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery from, low-rank coals in the Texas Gulf Coast area. Our research included an extensive coal characterization program, including acquisition and analysis of coal core samples and well transient test data. We conducted deterministic and probabilistic reservoir simulation and economic studies to evaluate the effects of injectant fluid composition (pure CO{sub 2} and flue gas), well spacing, injection rate, and dewatering on CO{sub 2} sequestration and ECBM recovery in low-rank coals of the Calvert Bluff formation of the Texas Wilcox Group. Shallow and deep Calvert Bluff coals occur in two, distinct, coalbed gas petroleum systems that are separated by a transition zone. Calvert Bluff coals

Sexual Selection

Sexual Selection: Perspectives and Models from the Neotropics presents new sexual selection research based upon neotropical species. As neotropical regions are destroyed at an alarming rate, with an estimated 140 species of rainforest plants and animals going extinct every day, it is important to bring neotropical research to the fore now. Sexual selection occurs when the male or female of a species is attracted by certain characteristics such as form, color or behavior. When those features lead to a greater probability of successful mating, they become more prominent in the species. Although most theoretical concepts concerning sexual selection and reproductive strategies are based upon Nor...
