Brazilian Geography
This book presents the history and theoretical contributions of Brazilian geography since the late twentieth century and shows how this sphere of knowledge has been organically integrated with social and territorial issues and with social movements. The relationship between the subjects and objects of research in Brazilian geography has been centred on the understanding and transformation of realities marked by injustice and inequality. Against this backdrop, the geography of the country has developed by integrating, relating to, and forming part of those realities as it headed out into the streets. Brazilian geography continues to hold theoretical debate in high regard as a result of the influence of critical theory. Coastal Resorts and Urbanization in Northeast Brazil
This book intends to present the development of socio-spatial practices in the metropolitan coast of the Northeast of Brazil, highlighting the main urban, spa and tourist agglomerations: Salvador-BA, Recife-PE, Fortaleza-CE, and Natal-RN. The objective is to study the processes of urbanization associated with maritime leisure. In the first chapter, the reader will find a historical and conceptual presentation highlighting the relevance of leisure practices, their forms-flows and their role in the formation of maritime resorts. The second chapter analyses the context of the northeastern region of Brazil and demonstrates the process of modernization and formation of the seaside function within the cities, and later, in the maritime metropolises of the region. The relationship between urbanization and touristic real estate ventures is the central theme of the third chapter, which proposes a specific methodology for studies of this nature. The final chapter presents the seaside resorts in the metropolitan area of Fortaleza, a case study similar to others in the Northeast, examining the urbanistic effects and the key ideas of the planners.

É um livro importante, tanto porque trata da Amazônia, o que é fundamental, como porque concentra a análise numa área da Amazônia - várzea - que, apesar de ter sido objeto de investigações importantes desde os anos 1940, como mostram os trabalhos de Hilgard O Reilly Sternberg (1998), ainda necessita muito, de estudos aprofundados pela sua importância para as populações que aqui viviam no período anterior à colonização, e porque as várzeas se constituíram na base de circulação e de penetração do projeto colonizador. Finalmente, o texto é indispensável por abordar o tema da vivência do homem da várzea, de modo competente, uma boa fundamentação teórica e aquilo que poderíamos denominar de vida cotidiana dos povos das floresta, da água e da terra das várzeas amazônicas.
