This volume provides a description and analysis of findings from a European Commission research and development project: «The Fifth Dimension - Local Learning Communities in a Global World», funded within the framework «Information, Society, and Technology (IST), School of Tomorrow». The contributors take as a point of departure that the school of tomorrow, the school in the information society, has two significant features. One is the expanded use of information and communication technologies (ICT). The other is the development of partnerships. The cases described here are based on the work of three European university teams from Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden; the Universit...

After Exile

Considers the effect of exile on contemporary South American writers. Can an exiled writer ever really go home again? What of the writers of Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, whose status as exiles in the 1970s and 1980s largely defined their identities and subject matter? After Exile takes a critical look at these writers, at the effect of exile on their work, and at the complexities of homecoming-a fraught possibility when democracy was restored to each of these countries. Both famous and lesser known writers people this story of dislocation and relocation, among them José Donoso, Ana Vásquez, Luisa Valenzuela, Cristina Peri Rossi, and Mario Benedetti. In their work-and their predicament-Am...

Computational Modeling of Infectious Disease: With Applications in Python provides an illustrated compendium of tools and tactics for analyzing infectious diseases using cutting-edge computational methods. From simple S(E)IR models, and through time series analysis and geospatial models, this book is both a guided tour through the computational analysis of infectious diseases and a quick-reference manual. Chapters are accompanied by extensive practical examples in Python, illustrating applications from start to finish. This book is designed for researchers and practicing infectious disease forecasters, modelers, data scientists, and those who wish to learn more about analysis of infectious disease processes in the real world. Connects computational infectious disease analysis to state-of-the-art data science Conveys ideas on epidemiology and infectious disease modeling in a clear, accessible way Provides code examples to elucidate best practices

Emerging Financial Markets in the Global Economy

This collection of papers considers many of the important issues raised by these dramatic changes in emerging financial markets, including: the nature of this systemic risk and how governments can go about reducing it: how to increase the supply of capital that can be invested in development; aspects of foreign direct investment; informal credit markets; the impact of informal finance on development; how lessons learned from microfinance in developing countries can be applied to credit markets in the United States; and how to create institutions that can effectively deal with the problems inherent in lending to poor people in developing countries. The book is intended for policy makers and scholars interested in capital markets in developing and transition economies. It is also suitable for use as a supplementary text in upper level undergraduate courses on development finance.

Vacationing in Dictatorships

Vacationing in Dictatorships

Vacationing in Dictatorships examines the political effects of international tourism in socialist Romania and Francoist Spain in the postwar era. Despite sharp economic and political differences between the two dictatorial regimes at the start of the Cold War, significant similarities existed as both states took advantage of international tourism to improve their image abroad and pursued processes of economic modernization to acquire hard currencies. By the end of the 1970s though, the two countries achieved rather different results in terms of tourism development, despite the fact that both shared many features in the 1940s and 1950s. By comparing the rise and evolution of international tourism on different sides of the Iron Curtain, Adelina Stefan provides a different assessment of the geopolitics of postwar Europe that further refines the Cold War's geographies separating Eastern and Western Europe. As a result, Vacationing in Dictatorships reveals a new perspective on the Cold War that reveals not only the developmental similarities between Eastern and Southern Europe but also the ideological struggle that pitted socialist East against capitalist West.

Shifting Paradigms in International Investment Law

  • Categories: Law

International investment law is in transition. Whereas the prevailing mindset has always been the protection of the economic interests of individual investors, new developments in international investment law have brought about a paradigm shift. There is now more than ever before an interest in a more inclusive, transparent, and public regime. Shifting Paradigms in International Investment Law addresses these changes against the background of the UNCTAD framework to reform investment treaties. The book analyses how the investment treaty regime has changed and how it ought to be changing to reconcile private property interests and the state's duty to regulate in the public interest. In doing ...

The Use of Resealed Erythrocytes as Carriers and Bioreactors

Until recently the only biomedical use of erythrocytes was in transfusion medicine to restore a normal oxygen delivery. The development of a technology that permits one to open and reseal erythrocytes has dramatically changed this perspective. Currently, a number of teams have shown that engineered erythrocytes can behave as circulating bioreactors for the degradation of toxic metabolites or the inactivation of xenobiotics, as drug delivery systems, as carriers of antigens of vaccinal interest, and in many others biomedical applications. The technology of opening and resealing the erythrocytes has also been used successfully to investigate several basic aspects of erythrocyte metabolism, sur...
