El objetivo de esta obra es orientar y plantear las bases para el análisis de las organizaciones educativas partiendo del reconocimiento de las características multidimensionales que las enriquecen, pero que también las hacen complejas. En ella se trata de comprender las organizaciones educativas abordando la manera de disponer sus elementos, sus prioridades y la interconexión entre ellas, además de tener en cuenta sus relaciones. Para ilustrar cómo debemos conocer y comprender estas organizaciones se utiliza la metáfora de las «cajas chinas» (cajas que contienen otras cajas cada vez más pequeñas, y éstas a su vez otras más pequeñas aún), una interpretación que, sin abandonar el realismo, no renuncia al sueño compartido de conseguir una educación más justa y equitativa.
