Details an investigation by Joseph M. Beck, a judge and lawyer from Fort Madison, Iowa, who would later serve on the state Supreme Court, into John H. Winterbotham and G.A. Jones. Beck was hired by Knickerbocker and Harris, businessmen in Pine Plains, New York, to investigate their claim as creditors on an outstanding debt owed by Winterbotham and Jones. The investigation reveals that Winterbotham and Jones are engaged in a manufacturing scheme that relies primarily on people imprisoned at the state penitentiary as laborers. The letter attempts to provide an exhaustive account of thier business dealings, all the property owned by the two men, and their debts. Beck informs Knickerbocker and Harris that collecting on their claim would be next to impossible.
