Chavin

This book is the first in more than a decade to provide new information on the Chavin phenomenon of ancient Peru. Thought by some to be the "Mother Culture" of ancient Peruvian cultures, Chavin is remarkable for its baroque, sophisticated art style in a variety of media, including finely carved stone monuments, beautifully formed pottery, and magnificent and complex metallurgy. Also, the textiles from Chavin are incredibly innovative, both iconographically and structurally. They, in fact, form the foundation for the later Andean textile evolution. Chapters in this book cover new interpretations of the history of the site of Chavin de Huantar, studies of related cultures, the role of shamanism, and many other topics of interest to specialists and the general reader, alike.

This paper discusses how wars of ideas can be waged, using the author's extensive experience, both as director general of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) and at other classical liberal think tanks. John Blundell begins his stimulating collection of published essays, reviews and introductions by showing how the founders of the IEA successfully fought the conventional planning wisdom of the 1960s and 1970s, providing the ideas which, by the 1980s and 1990s, had brought about increased freedom and a revival in the use of markets. He draws lessons from those days and then surveys the contemporary scene, showing how the anti-liberal ideas emerging now are different from those which prevailed in the early years of the IEA. As well as giving a valuable view of the IEAs development in the past, these essays also offer advice on how to continue winning in the new circumstances of the present. Waging the War of Ideas has been constantly in demand since it was first published in 2001. This new and expanded edition contains three new chapters and is introduced by Professor Walter Williams.

Originally published in 1910, Maurice Maeterlinck's THE BURIED TEMPLE is written with the author's characteristic care and thoughtfulness. A series of insightful five essays, it displays unique insights and graceful perception into the life of the spirit. Essays included in this collection are Mystery of Justice; Evolution of Mystery; Kingdom of Matter and The Past; Luck. Maeterlinck's writing is characterized by clear and simple expression with a subtle suggestion rather than a direct expression of ideas and emotions. THE BURIED TEMPLE is ideal for readers who see a purpose in life and value their personal ideals.MAURICE MAETERLINCK (1862-1949) was born in Belgium, into a prosperous Catholic family. He was closely associated with the French literary movement of symbolism, which used symbols to represent ideas and emotions. The author of more than 60 books replete with suggestions of universal mystery and auras of impending doom, Maeterlinck's work as a whole can be read as a symbolist manifesto. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911.
