Sustainability of the Agri-food System: Strategies and Performances
The 2013 annual conference of the Italian Society of Agricultural Economics (SIDEA) has been held in the attractive scenario of the city of Lecce under the organization of three different Universities of the Apulia Region (Università degli Studi di Bari, Università degli Studi di Foggia and Università del Salento). The scientific theme of the 50th SIDEA Conference has been “Sustainability of the agri-food system: Strategies and Performances” (Sostenibilità del Sistema Agroalimentare: strategie e performance). With such a topic, the SIDEA intended to cope with the challenges coming from a growing demand of food in a world where critical natural resources such as water, energy and land are becoming increasingly scarce and climate change is posing credible threats. The agri-food system and the broader bio-based economy are, in fact, human activities where the classic dimensions of sustainability (ecological, economic and social) are gaining a striking weight often showing evidence of frictions. Despite a significant growth in food production over the past century, today one of the most important challenges facing agro-food system is how to feed a growing population.

Initiatives on Prevention of Food Waste in the Retail and Wholesale Trades
This project was initiated by the Nordic Council of Ministers and its waste prevention group. The background to the project is that waste prevention is the highest priority in the waste hierarchy according to the EU Waste Directive. One other reason is the heavily increasing discussions in society on food waste in general. The project has been focusing on amounts of food waste, causes for food waste generation and initiatives to reduce the amounts of food waste from the retail and wholesale sector. Furthermore it gives some recommendations to measures that could be taken to change the present situation.
Establishing Av Nordic Life Cycle Association
The project aimed to establish and develop a non-profit organization, the Nordic Life Cycle Association, NorLCA, with the goal of supporting sustainable development through the use of life cycle approaches and methodology. NorLCA is a multidisciplinary platform for Life Cycle Thinking and addresses LCA-specialists, business managers, product developers, environmental managers, sales and marketing managers, researchers, teachers, NGOs, authorities, student, and others with an interest in life cycle thinking, eco-design and sustainable development. The main goal of NorLCA is to facilitate and support a broader and increased use of life cycle related concepts. NorLCA focuses on networking activities and dissemination of information and establisingh easily accessible information and knowledge exchange channels between the formal and informal life cycle networks
