On the Defensive considers how our ethical responses to the Nazi camps have unintentionally repressed and denied the experiences of their victims. Through detailed readings of survivor narratives, particularly the works of political deportees Jorge Semprun and Charlotte Delbo, Sharon Marquart examines how well-intentioned people - including victims, their family members, and readers of witness literature - respond to such testimony in ways that are understood as ethical by their communities but serve instead to ignore victims' experiences. As Marquart shows, collective disasters such as the Holocaust expose the limitations of our ethical theories. To cope with this instability we withdraw and defend ourselves through inattentive and formulaic responses that turn a blind eye to the plight of victims. Challenging contemporary theorizations of community, ethics, testimony, and trauma, On the Defensive is a far-reaching reflection on the ways in which communal understandings of our duties and responsibilities to others can facilitate the denial of an atrocity's horrors.
The Spanish Literary Generation of 1968: José Maria Guelbenzu, Lourdes Ortiz, and Ana María Moix serves multiple purposes. Most importantly, it is an overview of an important moment in Spanish literary history that is connected to an extremely important moment in world history, 1968, as well as what that year represents in many countries, such as France, Germany, Mexico, and the United States. This text aims to show how young writers who were coming of age precisely at that moment incorporated into their novels the new ideas that they found in the writing of many foreign authors, generally unknown to previous generations, whose works were essential to their development. The author has focused on three authors who he feels are most representative of their generation, and follows with a lengthy study of the critical reception they have received over time. Finally, in an appendix, one will find excerpts of an unpublished novel by Lourdes Ortiz and interviews with all three authors. It is hoped that this text, with its extensive bibliography, will serve as a valuable source for students and professors alike.

Keller analyses the aesthetics of haunting and the relationship between ideology and image production by revisiting twentieth-century Spanish history through the camera’s lens. Through its vision she demonstrates how the traumatic losses of the Spanish Civil War and their systematic denial and burial during the fascist dictatorship have constituted fertile territory for the expressions of loss, uncanny return, and untimeliness that characterize the aesthetic presence of the ghost. Examining fascist documentary newsreels, countercultural art films from the Spanish New Wave, and conceptual landscape photographs created since the transition to democracy, Keller reveals how haunting serves to mourn loss, redefine space and history, and confirm the significance of lives and stories previously hidden or erased.
