The Low Countries at the Crossroads
This book focuses on the diffusion of architectural inventions from the Low Countries to other parts of Europe from the late fifteenth until the end of the seventeenth century. Multiple pathways connected the architecture of the Low Countries with the world, but a coherent analysis of the phenomenon is still missing. Written by an international team of specialists, the book offers case-studies illustrating various mechanisms of transmission, such as the migration of building masters and sculptors who worked as architects abroad, networks of foreign patrons inviting Netherlandish artists, printed models and the role of foreign architects who visited the Low Countries for professional reasons. Its geographical scope is as broad as the period under review and includes all European regions where Netherlandish elements were found: from Spain to Scandinavia and from Scotland to Transylvania.

Living in Posterity, presented to Bart Westerweel on his retirement as Professor of Early Modern English literature at the University of Leiden, brings together thirty-nine essays on a wide variety of subjects and themes. The contributors, scholars from the Netherlands end abroad, have drawn inspiration from the many dualities that are characteristic of Westerweel's work, such as word/image, Anglo/Dutch, familiar/other, traditional/modern, and form/function. The result is a colourful mosaic of essays on history, culture, art and literature from the first century to the modern era. The binding theme of this richly diverse book lies in the idea of the continuity between the past and the present, the cohesion between what was and what is. Cosman Citroen (1881-1935)
Veel Nederlandse architecten trokken in het begin van de twintigste eeuw naar het zich snel ontwikkelende Nederlands-Indië. Het was de ‘gouden periode’ van de Nederlandse architectuur in de tropen. Cosman Citroen (1881-1935) bepaalde in belangrijke mate het gezicht van Soerabaja, het belangrijkste handelscentrum van Indonesië. Zijn gemeentehuis bindt traditie aan moderniteit en is met galerijen en een dubbel dak perfect ingesteld op een tropisch klimaat. Citroens laatste ontwerp, het kantoorgebouw voor Borsumij, is een toonbeeld van moderniteit: rechthoekig met een plat dak, uitgevoerd in betonskelet met brede vensterstroken. Citroen had door zijn opleiding gedeeltelijk een kunstnijverheidsachtergrond, zoals goed te zien is in het luxueuze interieur van de villa Tan Tjwan Bie, waar hij ook de teakhouten plafonds en lambriseringen vormgaf, evenals de hanglampen, het glas in lood en de vloer met bijzondere geometrische patronen.
