The Palgrave Handbook of Embodiment and Learning
This handbook provides an important overview of corporeality, embodiment and learning in education from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Situating the body at the centre of educational practice, the editors and contributors introduce the concept of ‘tact’ as a practical corporeal language. The chapters provide a spectrum of historical, conceptual, empirical and practical educational approaches for embodied pedagogical engagement. Tact and embodied knowledge form a significant component of a teacher’s capability and professionalism: interacting with students, a pedagogue responds to them tactfully, emotionally, sensitively, and reflectively searching for the right thing to do, the right words to say, improvising in aural, linguistic, spatial, and visual way that are as restrained as they are enabled by the body. This handbook questions the familiar and established essentialist and naturalist view of the body to allow new perspectives on how corporeality affects learners. It will be of interest to scholars in education and philosophy as well as those researching in across social sciences.

This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. The first part of the book outlines a fundamental understanding of the changing media environment of deep mediatization and its transformative capacity. Art of Suppression
This provocative study asks why we have held on to vivid images of the Nazis’ total control of the visual and performing arts, even though research has shown that many artists and their works thrived under Hitler. To answer this question, Pamela M. Potter investigates how historians since 1945 have written about music, art, architecture, theater, film, and dance in Nazi Germany and how their accounts have been colored by politics of the Cold War, the fall of communism, and the wish to preserve the idea that true art and politics cannot mix. Potter maintains that although the persecution of Jewish artists and other “enemies of the state” was a high priority for the Third Reich, removing them from German cultural life did not eradicate their artistic legacies. Art of Suppression examines the cultural histories of Nazi Germany to help us understand how the circumstances of exile, the Allied occupation, the Cold War, and the complex meanings of modernism have sustained a distorted and problematic characterization of cultural life during the Third Reich.
Studies on the educational quality of schools
The priority program 'The educational quality of schools' has been established seven years ago by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The projects in this program investigated conditions inside and outside of school and their impact on the development of mathematical, scientific, and cross-curricular competencies. In this book major findings of the program are presented. The projects not only give an overview of their research questioning methods and findings, but also of approaches and materials that have been developed to support learning and teaching in mathematics and science class rooms. The studies reported here identify factors for weaknesses in the educational outcomes that became apparent in the international comparisons like TIMSS and PISA. The projects, however, provide empirically substantiated units on approaches that can help to improve the educational quality of schools. [Publisher, ed].

Professionelle Kompetenzen im Studienverlauf
Ziel der an acht Hochschulen durchgeführten Studie TEDS-LT ist es, die bisher auf Mathematiklehrkräfte am Ende ihrer Ausbildung fokussierte Kompetenzforschung auf Deutsch- und Englischlehrkräfte auszuweiten und um einen (Quasi-)Längsschnitt zu ergänzen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde das fachliche, fachdidaktische und pädagogische Professionswissen von Lehramtsstudierenden der Sekundarstufe I mit den Unterrichtsfächern Deutsch, Englisch und Mathematik im Abstand von knapp zwei Jahren zwei Mal standardisiert getestet. In diesem Band werden die zum zweiten Messzeitpunkt eingesetzten Instrumente und Ergebnisse dargestellt. Der theoretische Rahmen und die Operationalisierung der erhobenen Konstrukte werden durch ausführliche Analysen von Item-Beispielen vorgestellt. Anschließend wird der Leistungsstand der Studierenden am Ende ihrer universitären Ausbildung kriterienorientiert betrachtet. Diese Darstellung wird um längsschnittliche Analysen ergänzt. Darüber hinaus erfolgen umfangreiche Untersuchungen zum Zusammenhang von Lerngelegenheiten während der Ausbildung mit dem Professionswissen, das in der Deutsch-, Englisch- und Mathematiklehrerausbildung erworben wurde.
