Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s-1970s

  • Categories: Art

A pioneering survey of Korea's dynamic postwar avant-garde, with new translations of manifestos, articles and primary sources The 1960s and 1970s marked a period of exceptional change in Korea, propelled by rapid urbanization and modernization, and influenced by an authoritarian state at home and a globalizing world beyond. Young artists of the era were not immune to these unprecedented socioeconomic, political and material conditions, responding with a groundbreaking and genre-defying body of avant-garde art known broadly as Experimental art (silheom misul). Both as individuals and in collectives, these artists broke definitively with their predecessors, redefining the boundaries of traditi...

Lineages: Korean Art at The Met

  • Categories: Art

In celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Arts of Korea Gallery, this issue of the Bulletin invites us to reflect on the past while embracing the future. Featuring objects from the Bronze Age to the present, Lineages: Korean Art at The Met illustrates both the continuities and ruptures of style, form, and medium that have defined the dynamic terrain of Korean art. The 47 works included—from lacquer and ceramics to paintings and collage—express Korean tradition, history, and socio-cultural change over more than three centuries of creativity. This volume honors one of the first museum galleries in the United States dedicated to Korean art by offering readers a greater understanding of the nation's aesthetic past and future.

Designing the Ecocity-in-the-Sky

Designing the Ecocity-in-the-Sky is a comprehensive resource on vertical urbanism and how to plan and design a vertical ecocity of 100 stories. The book covers the main objectives: ecodesign, concepts, habitats, and designing for biodiversity. There are detailed drawings, diagrams, and photos that work through the technical, research, analytic, and engineering issues of ecotowers and eco-engineering designs. The book is also helpful for anyone looking to understand multi-elevatoring concepts for multiuse towers, floor-plate designs for various usages, the effects of wind on towers, and other sustainable eco-engineering concepts.

Information Science and Applications

This book presents selected papers from the 10th International Conference on Information Science and Applications (ICISA 2019), held on December 16–18, 2019, in Seoul, Korea, and provides a snapshot of the latest issues regarding technical convergence and convergences of security technologies. It explores how information science is at the core of most current research as well as industrial and commercial activities. The respective chapters cover a broad range of topics, including ubiquitous computing, networks and information systems, multimedia and visualization, middleware and operating systems, security and privacy, data mining and artificial intelligence, software engineering and web technology, as well as applications and problems related to technology convergence, which are reviewed and illustrated with the aid of case studies. Researchers in academia, industry, and at institutes focusing on information science and technology will gain a deeper understanding of the current state of the art in information strategies and technologies for convergence security.

We used an online survey to conduct a convergent mixed methods study for formative research efforts to inform the development of communication campaign messages. Through the online survey with a convenience sample of participants recruited from MTurk, we collected both quantitative and qualitative data from members of the target audience to assist in the creation of narrative, or story-based, health communication campaign messages about reducing the use of cannabis during pregnancy. Through the online survey, we gathered information about participants' experiences with using cannabis to help craft the narratives as well as quantitative and qualitative data on preliminary messages developed based on previously collected insights from the target audience. Feedback was used to adjust and refine messages, which were then tested in an online experiment. The objective of this case study is to highlight the benefits and challenges of mixed-methods online research to engage hard-to-reach populations. We do so by describing our thought process throughout the project, as well as discussing critical decisions we had to make as a team to ensure participant care and data quality.

She's always been a compulsive drawer, and when she discovers anime, her hobby becomes an obsession. Though drawing and cosplay offer her an escape, she still struggles to connect with others. And in high school, the bullies are louder and meaner. Sarah's bubbling rage is threatening to burst.

Due to the development of technology and the popularization of online media streaming services (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, YouTube), the current media industry targets parents of babies and toddlers, and babies and toddlers themselves, as part of a growing consumer market. Most online media streaming services include entertainment programs targeted to even the youngest of viewers, as shown from Hulu streaming content for babies. Nevertheless, previous content analyses have not catalogued how gender is portrayed in these programs. Therefore, this study explored the gender portrayals of main characters based on a content analysis of programs targeted to Babies and Kids 2-4 streamed via Hulu. Almost ...

In recent years, we have assisted the remarkable growth in the use of functional polyesters. This book gathers novel research works dealing with the manufacturing and characterization of polyesters that have been functionalized by synthesis, copolymerization, additives (at micro- and nanoscale), surface modification, among other methodologies, to tailor desired properties in terms of mechanical, chemical, thermal, and barrier properties, biodegradation, and biocompatibility. Thus, Advances in Manufacturing and Characterization of Functional Polyesters will serve to guide a diverse audience of polymer scientists and engineers and provides an update of the “state-of-the-art” knowledge on functional polyesters.
