This book provides a comprehensive overview of plant omics and big data in the fields of plant and crop biology. It discusses each omics layer individually, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and covers model and non-model species. In a section on advanced topics, it considers developments in each specialized domain, including genome editing and enhanced breeding strategies (such as genomic selection and high-throughput phenotyping), with the aim of providing tools to help tackle global food security issues. The importance of online resources in big data biology are highlighted in a section summarizing both wet- and dry-biological portals. This section introduces biological resources, datasets, online bioinformatics tools and approaches that are in the public domain. This book is for students, engineers, researchers and academics in plant biology, genetics, biotechnology and bioinformatics.

War and Diplomacy in East and West

The New York Times said of Józef Hieronim Retinger that he was on intimate terms with most leading statesmen of the Western World, including presidents of the United States. He has been repeatedly acknowledged as one of the principle architects of the movement for European unity after the World War II, and one of the outstanding creative political influences of the post war period. He has also been credited with being the dark master behind the so-called "Bilderberg Group," described variously as an organization of idealistic internationalists, and a malevolent global conspiracy. Before that, Retinger involved himself in intelligence activities during World War II and, given the covert and semi-covert nature of many of his activities, it is little wonder that no biography has appeared about him. This book draws on a broad range of international archives to rectify that.

The main objective of this research paper is to present how the public sector may contribute to the development of social innovations and to what extent this process may be supported by the European Social Fund's (ESF) resources. The research method comprises critical analysis of the ESF reports. Discussion on the concept of social innovation is covered in the first part. Then determinants of social innovations are presented, followed by observations on social innovations in the public sector. The subsequent part is devoted to a short study of the ESF as an instrument to support social innovations in the public sector and finally a short empirical example of the ESF usage in Poland is delivered. Although the usage of the ESF funds as an instrument strengthening social innovations in the public sector is not always unproblematic, it may be assessed to be a useful measure of support in this area.
