Small Animal Gastroenterology

State-of-the-Art Small Animal Gastroenterology – From Diagnosis to Management Acute and chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are among the most common conditions why dogs and cats are presented to a veterinarian. This extensively revised and expanded 2nd edition offers a comprehensive overview of the broad field of small animal gastroenterology, including hepatology and pancreatology. Learn about the latest diagnostic techniques and the clinical evaluation of dogs and cats with specific clinical signs. The subsequent sections provide a comprehensive overview of the organ-specific diseases involving individual segments of the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and exocrine pancreas. Diseases that affect more than one segment of the gastrointestinal tract or even other organs are also covered in this book. Benefit from the vast knowledge and experience of a team of internationally renowned authors.

Outcome of Antiviral Immunity in the Liver is Shaped by the Level of Antigen Expressed in Infected Hepatocytes

Abstract: The liver bears unique immune properties that support both immune tolerance and immunity, but the mechanisms responsible for clearance versus persistence of virus-infected hepatocytes remain unclear. Here, we dissect the factors determining the outcome of antiviral immunity using recombinant adenoviruses that reflect the hepatropism and hepatrophism of hepatitis viruses. We generated replication-deficient adenoviruses with equimolar expression of ovalbumin, luciferase, and green fluorescent protein driven by a strong ubiquitous cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter (Ad-CMV-GOL) or by 100-fold weaker, yet hepatocyte-specific, transthyretin (TTR) promoter (Ad-TTR-GOL). Using in vivo biolumi...

Abstract: Changes of mRNA 3'UTRs by alternative polyadenylation (APA) have been associated to numerous pathologies, but the mechanisms and consequences often remain enigmatic. By combining transcriptomics, proteomics and recombinant viruses we show that all tested strains of IAV, including A/PR/8/34(H1N1) (PR8) and A/Cal/07/2009 (H1N1) (Cal09), cause APA. We mapped the effect to the highly conserved glycine residue at position 184 (G184) of the viral non-structural protein 1 (NS1). Unbiased mass spectrometry-based analyses indicate that NS1 causes APA by perturbing the function of CPSF4 and that this function is unrelated to virus-induced transcriptional shutoff. Accordingly, IAV strain PR8,...

Abstract: Modern oncology aims at patient-specific therapy approaches, which triggered the development of biomedical imaging techniques to synergistically address tumor biology at the cellular and molecular level. PET/MR is a new hybrid modality that allows acquisition of high-resolution anatomic images and quantification of functional and metabolic information at the same time. Key steps of the Warburg effect-one of the hallmarks of tumors-can be measured non-invasively with this emerging technique. The aim of this study was to quantify and compare simultaneously imaged augmented glucose uptake and LDH activity in a subcutaneous breast cancer model in rats (MAT-B-III) and to study the effec...
