Applied Panel Data Analysis for Economic and Social Surveys
Many economic and social surveys are designed as panel studies, which provide important data for describing social changes and testing causal relations between social phenomena. This textbook shows how to manage, describe, and model these kinds of data. It presents models for continuous and categorical dependent variables, focusing either on the level of these variables at different points in time or on their change over time. It covers fixed and random effects models, models for change scores and event history models. All statistical methods are explained in an application-centered style using research examples from scholarly journals, which can be replicated by the reader through data provided on the accompanying website. As all models are compared to each other, it provides valuable assistance with choosing the right model in applied research. German Division as Shared Experience
Despite the nearly three decades since German reunification, there remains little understanding of the ways in which experiences overlapped across East-West divides. German Division as Shared Experience considers everyday life across the two Germanies, using perspectives from history, literary and cultural studies, anthropology and art history to explore how interconnections as well as fractures between East and West Germany after 1945 were experienced, lived and felt. Through its novel approach to historical method, the volume points to new understandings of the place of narrative, form and lived sensibility in shaping Germans’ simultaneously shared and separate experiences of belonging during forty years of division from 1945 to 1990.
World Literature and the Postcolonial
This volume approaches literary representations of post and neocolonialism by combining their readings with respective theoretical configurations. The aim is to cast light upon common characteristics of contemporary texts from around the world that deal with processes of colonization. Based on the epistemic discourses of postimperialism/postcolonialism, globalization, and world literature, the volume’s chapters bring together international scholars from various disciplines in the Humanities, including Comparative Cultural Studies, Slavic, Romance, German, and African Studies. The main concern of the contributions is to conceptualize an autonomous category of a world literature of the colonial, going well beyond established classifications according to single languages or center-periphery dichotomies.
Guidelines for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis
WHO has issued new guidelines for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, a fatal disease provoked by a parasitic infection, transmitted by the bite of infected tsetse flies in sub-Saharan Africa. The recent development of a new molecule (fexinidazole) presents an opportunity to improve the therapeutic options. WHO has invested in following these developments, in commissioning independent evidence reviews, and in convening experts to develop new guidelines that reconfigure the therapeutic choices by giving new roles to this new molecule and the previously existing ones, in order to offer the best treatment possible for each type of patient. These guidelines are for the treatment of both disease forms: gambiense HAT, the slowly progressing form, caused by infection with Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, in western and central Africa; and rhodesiense HAT, the more rapidly progressive form, caused by T. b. rhodesiense, in eastern and southern Africa. They supersede the WHO interim guidelines for the treatment of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis, issued in 2019.
