First, a word of warning! This book is not about the BBC TV show Mastermind, or the much revered late Magnus Magnusson. This book starts with the Fowler family tree in 1541 and then moves swiftly on. Rather than a true biography the book branches out into what was happening elsewhere around the time of which I write. World War II; The Long March (sometimes called The Death March); details of the first jet plane flight; National Service; Ouija boards; meeting Elvis Presley; and Freddie Trueman; the Berlin Wall; Germany, Russia, Italy, The Maldives, America; Castle Howard; La Jurade de Saint-Emilion; meeting HRH Prince Charles; a court case; meeting the Lord Chief Justice, and so on... The book is intended to be light hearted and humorous. As well as being a memoir it also comprises part travelogue and part social history. It also provides a miscellany of other happenings, doings and yet more anecdotes, which occurred throughout my lifetime

The Palgrave Handbook of History and Social Studies Education

This Handbook presents an international collection of essays examining history education past and present. Framing recent curriculum reforms in Canada and in the United States in light of a century-long debate between the relationship between theory and practice, this collection contextualizes the debate by exploring the evolution of history and social studies education within their state or national contexts. With contributions ranging from Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, chapters illuminate the ways in which curriculum theorists and academic researchers are working with curriculum developers and educators to translate and refine notions of historical thinking or inquiry as well as pedagogical practice.

The Anachronistic Turn

The Anachronistic Turn: Historical Fiction, Drama, Film and Television is the first study to investigate the ways in which the creative use of anachronism in historical fictions can allow us to rethink the relationship between past and present. Through an examination of literary, cinematic, and popular texts and practices, this book investigates how twenty-first century historical fictions use creative anachronisms as a way of understanding modern issues and anxieties. Drawing together a wide range of texts across all forms of historical fiction - novels, dramas, musicals, films and television - this book re-frames anachronism not as an error, but as a deliberate strategy that emphasises the...

Waiting for Antichrist

How can people believe that the supernatural end of the world lies just around the corner when, so far, every such prediction has been proved wrong? Some scholars argue that millenarians are psychologically disturbed; others maintain that their dreams of paradise on earth reflect a nascent political awareness. In this book Damian Thompson looks at the members of one religious group with a strong apocalyptic tradition--Kensington Temple, a large Pentecostal church in London--and attempts to understand how they reconcile doctrines of the end of the world with the demands of their everyday lives. He asks such questions as: Who is making the argument that the world is about to end, and on whose ...

This edited volume aims to deepen our understanding of state power through a series of case studies of political violence arising from state ‘counter-terrorism’ strategies. The book examines how state counter-terrorism strategies are invariably underpinned by terror, in the form of state political violence. It seeks to answer three key questions: To what extent can counter-terror strategies be read as a form of state terror? How fundamental is state terror to the maintenance of a neo-liberal social order? What are the features of counter-terrorism that render it so easily reducible to state terror? In order to explore these issues, and to reach an understanding of what it means to say th...
