Transitions
Formidable challenges confront Australia and its human settlements: the mega-metro regions, major and provincial cities, coastal, rural and remote towns. The key drivers of change and major urban vulnerabilities have been identified and principal among them are resource-constraints, such as oil, water, food, skilled labour and materials, and carbon-constraints, linked to climate change and a need to transition to renewable energy, both of which will strongly shape urban development this century. Transitions identifies 21st century challenges to the resilience of Australia’s cities and regions that flow from a range of global and local influences, and offers a portfolio of solutions to these critical problems and vulnerabilities. The solutions will require fundamental transitions in many instances: to our urban infrastructures, to our institutions and how they plan for the future, and perhaps most of all to ourselves in terms of our lifestyles and consumption patterns. With contributions from 92 researchers - all leaders in their respective fields - this book offers the expertise to chart pathways for a sustainability transition.

More Than a Message
When we selected "More Than A Message" as the title for our book we were looking for something catchy that may inspire people to take a closer look. We did not realize that our chosen title may very well reveal the book's true purpose. We believe this collection of our poems, all written as part of a class in our sophomore curriculum, is a worthy contribution to the literary landscape. But it is more than that. There is a wisdom dwelling in the heart and soul of every young person, a wisdom our world needs in troubled times. We do not claim to have all the answers, but young people everywhere are asking the right questions. We invite you to read the poems a couple of times. Some of them belong with your finest collections, others may not be ready yet for prime time. But all of them are expressed from within the imagination of young people who have something very important to say. Perhaps you can find your own questions in the midst of these poems. Your reading, just as our writing, will contribute meaning to the world. Flood-related health risk assessment: a case study in Hoi An City, Quang Nam province, Vietnam
Flooding is one of the most frequent and severe disasters in Hoi An City. The analysis of flood events in Hoi An revealed the impacts of flooding on many aspects of human life in this area including severe health risk. However, through literature review, the research showed that few studies about health risk assessment were performed in Vietnam in general and in Hoi An City specifically. Therefore, assessment of the health risk due to flooding is conducted in this research. The goal of this study is to develop a method to assess human health risk due to flooding with a focus on communicable diseases. Consideration of climate change deals increasingly with impacts and responses, and therefore involves a wide range of technical issues and a diverse community of experts. One of the challenges faced is that of ensuring effective communication between these different areas of expertise. For example, climate change studies require new types of collaboration between carbon cycle modellers and economists, and between meteorologists and coastal geomorphologists.
